Hockey Night: Hermantown holds off Shakopee

Dec. 31: Dallas Vieau scores twice for unbeaten Hawks in narrow victory; Woodbury tops Hastings for South St. Paul tourney title; Matt Vander Vort scores four in Edina win

Hermantown 4, Shakopee 3

HERMANTOWN - Junior forward Dallas Vieau scored back-to-back goals 13 seconds apart late in the first period on for Hermantown, which held of late-rallying Shakopee 4-3 on Saturday at Hermantown Ice Arena in one of eight games played statewide on New Year's Eve.

No. 1-1A Hermantown (6-0-1), the defending Class 1A champion, is one of two remaining undefeated teams in the state, joining 9-0-0 Warroad, last season's Class 1A runner-up.

Vieau, a Penn State commit, put the Hawks ahead 2-0 with the second of his goals coming with 1:21 remaining in the opening period. Vieau also assisted on George Peterson's goal that put the Hawks ahead 3-0 midway through the second.

No. 19-2A Shakopee (5-2-0) rallied in the third as Cooper Simpson scored goals 29 seconds apart to pull the Sabres to within 4-3.

Shakopee goaltender Aleksi Huson made 44 saves. Hermantown's Dane Callaway had 15 stops.

Woodbury 5, Hastings 2

SOUTH ST. PAUL - Senior defenseman Caden Schlattman's shorthanded goal midway through the second period helped propel Woodbury to a 5-2 victory over Hastings in the championship game of the South St. Paul Premier at Doug Woog Arena.

The game was a rematch last year's tournament championship, won 6-1 by Hastings. It was Woodbury's first South St. Paul holiday tourney title since 2008.

Schlattman's goal gave the Royals (7-3-0) a 4-0 lead, and Tommy Dittrich added a goal with 1:28 left in the second to make the score 5-0 heading into the third.

Hastings (4-2-1) rallied in the third with power-play goals by Brody Larsen and Blake Vandehoef in the opening 4:13.

Ethan Hansen, Jan Tichy and Joey Lucius also scored for Woodbury, which defeated Bloomington Jefferson 4-2 and St. Paul Highland Park 5-2 to reach the title game.

The holiday tournament tile was the second for Woodbury this season, as the Royals won their Thanksgiving tournament to open their schedule, beating Champlin Park 5-2 in the championship on Nov. 26.

Edina 5, Chaska 0

EDINA - Senior forward Matt Vander Vort scored four consecutive goals, three of them in the third period, as Edina rolled past Chaska 5-0 at Braemar Arena for its eighth straight victory. 

Vander Vort scored three goals in a span of 3:21 midway through the third period as No. 7-2A Edina (7-3-0) surged to a 4-0 lead. He opened the scoring with a shorthanded goal early in the second period.

Edina senior goaltender Robbie Clarkowski made 18 saves to earn the shutout. Max Maginnis made 14 saves for Chaska (3-8-1).

Minneapolis 9, Hutchinson 2

HUTCHINSON - Hank Davis scored three goals and added an assist as Minneapolis cruised past Hutchinson 9-2 at Burich Arena.

Minneapolis (4-5-1) scored seven unanswered goals in the second and third periods, including two from Davis. Mathew Walsch and Nick Anderson ignited the flurry with goals 18 seconds apart midway through the second.

Nolan Reiter and Manny Pearce scored first-period goals for No. 20-1A Hutchinson (4-4-0). Ronan Davis and Hank Davis scored in the first for Minneapolis in the matchup of Section 2A foes.

Buffalo 2, Spring Lake Park 0

BUFFALO - Senior forward Ryan Roethke's goal early in the third period broke a scoreless tie and held up in the winner as Buffalo beat Spring Lake Park 2-0 at the Buffalo Civic Center.

Lex Preugschas added a power-play goal for the Bison (5-3-1) with 4:32 remaining. Roethke assisted on the goal, giving him a team-best 11 points on the season. 

Brock Lueck made 41 saves for Spring Lake Park (3-6-1), which was outshot 43-17.

Farmington 5, St. Paul Highland Park 0

SOUTH ST. PAUL - Senior Mitch Getting made 20 saves for the shutout as Farmington beat St. Paul Highland Park 5-0 in the third-place game of the South St. Paul Premier at Doug Woog Arena.

Kyler Schwamb and Luke Coolidge each had a goal and an assist for the Tigers (3-6-0).

Ben Olson made 26 saves for St. Paul Highland Park (6-4-1).
