Hockey Night: Lakeville South outlasts Hill-Murray

Dec. 27: Cougars sophomore Jackson Ernst's hat trick includes overtime goal; Maple Grove too much for CDH; Chaska forges tie with Rogers

Lakeville South 5, Hill-Murray 4 (OT)

ST. LOUIS PARK - Jackson Ernst's third goal of the game gave Lakeville South a 5-4 comeback win over Hill-Murray in overtime in the first round of the Premiere Holiday Classic in the Park at the St. Louis Park Rec Center.

Ernst, a sophomore forward, scored with 3:22 left in the extra session when his shot beat Hill-Murray goalie Jack Erickson high on the glove side. Ernst forced overtime by scoring with 4:44 left in regulation for No. 4-2A Lakeville South (5-1-0). He also scored 1:05 into the second.

No. 12-2A Hill-Murray (3-4-0) led 3-2 after the first and 4-3 after two periods.

The Cougars outshot Hill-Murray 34-23.

Maple Grove 6, Cretin-Derham Hall 3

MAPLE GROVE - Maple Grove scored the game's final three goals, all in the third period, as it defeated Cretin-Derham Hall 6-3 in a first-round game of the Premiere Holiday Classic in the Grove at the Maple Grove Community Center.

Lucas Margenau scored two power-play goals in the third period for No. 5-2A Maple Grove (5-2-0). He was also credited with an assist. Blake Steenerson added a goal and assist for the Crimson.

No. 8-2A Cretin-Derham Hall (7-3-0) got two goals and an assist from Jake Fisher.

Rogers 3, Chaska 3 (OT)

PRIOR LAKE - Peyton Chase scored twice in the the final 6:39 of the third period as Chaska and Rogers skated to a 3-3 overtime tie in a first-round game of the Hockey for Life Classic at the Dakotah! Ice Center.

No. 3-2A Rogers (6-1-1) built a 3-1 lead after Sam Ranallo's power-play goal 10 seconds into the third.

Chase scored on the power play with 6:39 remaining in the third before tying the score with 46 seconds left for Chaska (2-6-1).

Ranallo added a first-period goal for the Royals, who also got a goal from Brandon Swanson. Nolan Geerdes led Rogers with two assists.

Nathan Hinze had a goal and an assist for the Hawks.

Fergus Falls 3, New Ulm 3

FERGUS FALLS - Kellen Stenstrom and Shane Zierden scored in the shootout for Fergus Falls as it beat New Ulm in the first round of the Fergus Falls Holiday Classic at the Fergus Falls Community Center.

The game, which officially will be scored as a 3-3 tie, went straight to the shootout as no overtime period was played.

The game's other six goals all came in the first period.

No. 19-1A New Ulm (7-0-1) got goals from Taylor Hansen, Dawson Kraus and Bryer Lang, who scored shorthanded.

No. 16-1A Fergus Falls (3-2-1) recorded power-play goals from Sam Dirkman, Leighton Buckmeier and Kellen Stenstrom.

St. Thomas Academy 4, Prior Lake 1

PRIOR LAKE - St. Thomas Academy erupted for four third-period goals as the Cadets defeated Prior Lake 4-1 in the first round of the Hockey for Life Classic at the Dakotah! Ice Center in Prior Lake.

After Will Emerson gave Prior Lake (4-4-0) a 1-0 lead in the second, the Cadets' Jimmy Zavoral tied the game 4:46 into the third.

Zach Howard scored 20 seconds later to give No. 9-2A St. Thomas Academy (8-1-0) the lead. Howard then scored 6:23 into the period before Jordan Tachney's power-play goal with 1:56 remaining completed the scoring.

Tyler Magozzi made 15 saves for the Cadets.

Wayzata 4, Blake 1

MAPLE GROVE - Jibber Kuhl scored the tying and go-ahead goals as Wayzata recorded a 4-1 win over Blake in the first round of the Premiere Holiday Classic in the Grove at the Maple Grove Community Center.

Kuhl's two goals were part of a four-goal run for No. 2-2A Wayzata (7-0-1). Kuhl first scored with 54 seconds left in the first period to tie the game and then recorded his second goal 2:03 into the second.

Brooks Gengler scored 63 seconds later for Wayzata. Jake Mattson rounded out the scoring with 45 seconds left in the second.

Finn Werner scored in the first period for Blake (3-3-0).

Princeton 1, St. Paul Academy 0

BLAINE - Jake Baumann's first-period goal held up as the winner as Princeton outlasted St. Paul Academy 1-0 on Tuesday at the Super Rink to advance to the championship game of the Herb Brooks Holiday Classic - Silver Division. 

Princeton goaltender James Koecher made 30 saves for the shutout. St. Paul Academy's Isak Bildsten stopped 28 shots.

Simley 3, Southwest Christian/Richfield 3 (OT)

BLAINE - Matt Milner's shootout goal completed Simley's rally past Southwest Christian/Richfield in the Herb Brooks Holiday Classic's - Silver Division semifinal at the Super Rink.

Milner was the Spartans' first shooter in the shootout. All of the other shooters failed to convert. Simley (3-5-1) plays Princeton in the championship game.

Southwest Christian/Richfield (4-2-2), which won a shootout game Monday, built a 3-0 lead on first-period goals by Jared Greiner, Kaden Feltmann and Caleb Bender.

Simley started its rally when Caden Renslow intercepted a pass and beat the goaltender 3:49 into the second. Jake Stanton scored on the power play with assists going to Renslow and Milner with 12:22 remaining in the second.

Simley evened the score on Ethan Unglesbee's goal 4:01 into the third.
