PLYMOUTH - Junior forward Brooks Gengler scored with 3:44 left in overtime as Wayzata escaped Wednesday's "Blizzard Battle" against Lake Conference rival Eden Prairie with a 2-1 victory at the Plymouth Ice Center.
Onrushing Brittan Alstead drew two Eden Prairie defenders then fed a pass through the slot to an open Gengler in front of Eagles' goaltender Isaiah Paulnock. Gengler's low shot skidded between Paulnock's leg pads. The assist was Alstead's second of the game.
Gengler's goal was his second of the season and kept No. 2-2A Wayzata (6-0-1) among the state's group of eight remaining unbeaten teams.
Wayzata's Hawke Huff and Eden Prairie's Mason Moe traded first-period goals.
No. 16-2A Eden Prairie dropped to 3-4-0 with the loss.
The game was played despite inclement weather that forced the postponement of the other five games originally set for Wednesday night. All but 11 of Thursday's 45 games were also postponed because of snowy, frigid weather leading to treacherous road conditions.
Travel wasn't as much of a concern for Wayzata and Eden Prairie, as the west Metro high schools are separated by 15 miles.
