Hockey Night: Stillwater tops Mahtomedi for St. Croix bragging rights

Dec. 20: Ty Tuccitto scores twice for Ponies in win over arena neighbors; Duluth East stuns Andover; Warroad steamrolls Thief River Falls

Stillwater 3, Mahtomedi 1

STILLWATER - Ty Tuccitto had a goal and an assist as Stillwater slipped past Mahtomedi 3-1 on Tuesday in a matchup of teams that share residence at the St. Croix Valley Recreation Center.

No. 18-2A Stillwater (6-1-0) led 2-0 after the first period on goals by Tuccitto and Brody Dustin.

Corey Bohmert scored late in the second period to pull No. 3-1A Mahtomedi (5-2-0) to within 2-1. 

Blake Vanek's goal early in the third period restored the Ponies' two goal lead.

Tuccitto's goal was his team-leading seventh of the season.

Duluth East 5, Andover 1

DULUTH - Noah Teng scored twice and added an assist as Duluth East stunned Andover 5-1 in a matchup with Section 7AA seeding implications at the Heritage Sports Center. 

Teng's first goal came during a three-goal flurry for Duluth East (4-5-0), putting the Greyhounds ahead 4-0 entering the third.

Teng scored again in the third, as did Ben Doll for No. 5-2A Andover (4-4-1).

Warroad 5, Thief River Falls 1

THIEF RIVER FALLS - Carson Pilgrim scored twice and Jayson Shaugabay had two assists as Warroad remained unbeaten with a 5-1 victory over longtime Section 8A rival Thief River Falls at Ralph Engelstad Arena.

Both of Pilgrim's goals came shorthanded, including one in the second period, as No. 2-1A Warroad (6-0-0) took a 3-0 lead after a scoreless first.

Max Arlt scored the lone goal for No. 11-1A Thief River Falls (2-4-1), pulling the Prowlers to within 3-1 early in the third period.

Warroad defenseman Ryan Lund and Pilgrim closed the scoring.

Maple Grove 4, Centennial 2

CIRCLE PINES - Maple Grove scored four unanswered goals as it rallied from an early deficit to beat Centennial 4-2 at Centennial Sports Arena.

Centennial (3-2-1) was in upset mode early as Brock Carls scored the lone goal of the first period and Drake Ramirez added one 22 seconds into the second to make it 2-0.

Jacob Sinclair, Lucas Busch and Finn Brink scored second-period goals to give No. 8-2A Maple Grove (4-2-0) a 3-2 lead heading into the third.

Ty Patefield scored the lone goal of the third period for Maple Grove, which outshot the Cougars 39-25.

New Ulm 2, Hutchinson 1

HUTCHINSON - Undefeated New Ulm, which has run roughshod over Big South Conference foes for the past several years, ventured out of conference play with success by beating Hutchinson 2-1 at Burich Arena.

Austin Uecker's second-period goal proved to be the winner for New Ulm (7-0-0), which also got a first-period goal from Taylor Hansen.

Easton Mallack scored in the first for No. 15-1A Hutchinson (4-3-0).

Hermantown 8, Duluth Denfeld 1

DULUTH - Wyatt Carlson scored three goals as Hermantown asserted its Section 7A dominance by beating Duluth Denfeld, its primary challenger the past several seasons, 8-1 at Heritage Sports Center.

No. 1-1A Hermantown (4-0-1) led 1-0 after the first. The Hawks then scored three goals to open the second, including Carlson's first.

John Scott's goal late in the second pulled No. 16-1A Duluth Denfeld (4-3-1) within three at 4-1.

Hermantown then scored four unanswered goals in the third period, including two each from Carlson and Mason Sundbom. 

Hermantown outshot Denfeld 37-14.

Northfield 3, New Prague 0

NEW PRAGUE - Keaton Walock stopped 27 shots for the shutout as Northfield topped New Prague 3-0 in a matchup of Section 1A foes at New Prague Community Center.

Jake Geiger, Cullen Merrit and Brayden Olson scored for No. 6-1A Northfield (7-2-0). 

Oskar Pomerenke made 23 saves for No. 12-1A New Prague (3-3-0), which won the section last season as the No. 4 seed and beat top-seeded Northfield 3-2 in a semifinal.

Winona 5, La Crescent-Hokah 4

WINONA - John Vail's shorthanded goal with 11 seconds left boosted Winona to its first victory of the season, 5-4 over La Crescent-Hokah at Bud King Ice Arena.

Wyatt Farrell, the state's leading goal scorer with 24, had a hat trick for La Crescent-Hokah (7-3-0), and his goal with 3:02 remaining tied it at 4-4.

Teis Larsen scored twice for Winona (1-4-1), which has played four one-goal games -- and four overtime games -- to start the season.

Brainerd 3, Little Falls 2 (OT)

BRAINERD - Junior forward Kale Koop scored with 1:35 left in overtime to lift Brainerd to a 3-2 victory over Little Falls at Essential Health Sports Center.

Koop stole the puck from a Little Falls defender at the blue line, skated down the slot and fired a low shot to the left of Flyers goaltender Richie Varriano.

Brainerd (2-3-0) led 2-0 after the first on goals from Kalvin Stengrim and John Finnegan. No. 10-1A Little Falls tied it in the second on goals from Matthew Cooper and Carter Oothoudt.

Ryan Gerlich made 26 saves for Brainerd while Varriano had 44 stops for Little Falls.

Delano 2, St. Cloud Cathedral 1

ST. CLOUD - Junior defenseman Brayden Coppin's goal with 3:30 remaining lifted Delano past St. Cloud Cathedral 2-1 at the Municipal Athletic Complex.

John Hirschfeld scored the lone goal of the first period as St. Cloud Cathedral (2-5-0) took a 1-0 lead. Cade Bruett scored for No. 13-1A Delano (3-3-0) in the second to tie it at 2-2.

Coppin's goal was his first of the season.

The teams each fired 30 shots on goal, each took two penalties and each went 0-for-2 on the power play.
