MOUND - Andrew Bastian scored twice, Shae Gavin had three assists and Brody Kunst stopped all 18 shots he faced as Mankato East cruised past Mound Westonka 5-0 at Thaler Sports Center, one of two games played Monday night.
Mankato East (2-4-0) led 2-0 entering the third and pulled away with goals from Rafe Bowman and Andrew Bastian in the final 1:50. Zachary Lebens also scored in the third.
The win was the second straight for the Class 1A Cougars, state tournament qualifiers last March who opened the season with four straight losses, all against Class 2A opponents.
It was also the first career victory - and shutout - for Kunst, a sophomore making his fourth start.
Mound Westonka dropped to 2-5-0.

WADENA - Aaron Sutherland's power-play goal 6:08 into the third period proved to be the winner for Wadena-Deer Creek in a wild 7-5 triumph over Bagley/Fosston in a game with huge momentum swings at Wadena Community Center.
Sutherland and Connor Davis each scored twice for the Wolverines (5-2-0), who led 3-0 after the first period.
Bagley/Fosston (2-3-0) scored four straight to open the second period, including three from Quinten Friborg. Connor Davis and Carson Davis scored late in the second to give the Wolverines a 5-4 lead.
Breckin Levin's second goal of the game for the Flyers tied it at 5-5 2:49 into the third.
Jack Koranda gave Wadena-Deer Creek it's two-goal final cushion.
