Hockey Night: Hermantown upends Hill-Murray

Dec. 3: Hawks take down second Class 2A power in as many nights; Edina notches first win; Warroad too much for Mahtomedi

Hermantown 3, Hill-Murray 1

EDEN PRAIRIE - Defending state Class 1A champion Hermantown recorded its second win in as many days over a state Class 2A tournament qualifier from last season as it beat Hill-Murray 3-1 on Saturday in the second round of the Champions Cup at the Eden Prairie Community Center.

Jude Bonin scored with with 3:06 left in the first to put Hill-Murray (1-1-0) ahead 1-0.

Kade Kohanski tied the game and Dallas Vieau gave  Hermantown (2-0-0) a 2-1 lead midway in the second. Wyatt Carlson's empty-net goal with 21 seconds left in the game completed the scoring.

After taking the 2-1 lead, Hermantown prevented Hill-Murray from scoring on two power plays in the second and a major power play in the third.

Garron Opsahl stopped 28 shots for the win. Jack Erickson made 19 saves for Hill-Murray.

Hermantown beat Cretin-Derham Hall 6-3 on Friday.

Warroad 7, Mahtomedi 4

WARROAD - Warroad surrendered two early goals then answered with six straight of its own en route to a 7-4 victory over Mahtomedi at The Gardens Arena in a matchup of the frequent state Class 1A semifinalists.

Carter Haycraft scored 50 seconds into the first period to put Mahtomedi (3-1-0) in front. The Zephyrs pushed it 2-0 when Seth Nelson scored with 6:49 remaining in the first.

Warroad (3-0-0) responded one minute later with Murray Marvin-Cordes' first of his two goals. Jayson Shaugabay tied it at 2-2 with 2:55 left in the opening period.

The second period was the Carson Pilgrim Show as he scored two even-strength goals and one shorthanded to give Warroad a 5-2 lead.

Marvin-Cordes' second goal came on the power play 188 seconds into the third. Mahtomedi's Cole Swanson and Max Egan and Warroad's Taven James finished the scoring.

Pilgrim and Shaugabay each added two assists.

Edina 3, Benilde-St. Margaret's 2

ST. LOUIS PARK - Jackson Nevers had a goal an assist as Edina, which was winless in its first three games, earned its first victory by beating Benilde-St. Margaret's 3-2 at St. Louis Park Rec Center.

Nevers and Robbie Cowan scored less than two minutes apart in the second to put Edina (1-3-0) ahead 2-0. 

Ben Norris scored late in the second and Poul Anderson scored early in the third as the Red Knights, making their season debut, closed to within a goal.

White Bear Lake 5, Centennial 4 (OT)

CIRCLE PINES - Joe Beslisle scored 2:25 into overtime to give White Bear Lake a 5-4 win over Centennial at Centennial Sports Arena.

Centennial (2-2-0) opened a 3-1 lead when Peyton Blair scored on the power play with 5:57 remaining in the second. Drake Ramirez and Gavin Schahn scored in the first for the Cougars, while Aiden Welch got the Bears on the board.

Nolan Road's goal with 3:02 left in the second sparked a three-goal outburst for White Bear Lake (3-0-0).

Devin Willett and Charlier Olsen scored 42 seconds apart in the third period but Blair sent the game into overtime with his goal at 3:39.

Blair had two assists to go with his two goals.

Minnetonka 3, Moorhead 0

MINNETONKA - Sam Scheetz scored twice and Kaiser Nelson stopped 13 shots as Minnetonka shut out Moorhead 3-0 at the Pagel Activity Center.

Scheetz opened the scoring in the second period as Minnetonka (4-0-0) fired 33 shots on goal in the first two periods.

The Skippers' Gavin Garry made it 2-0 midway in the third before Scheetz scored an empty-net goal with 2:10 remaining.

Kai Weigel made 44 saves for Moorhead (2-3-0).

Orono 8, Alexandria 5

ALEXANDRIA - Bradley Walker and Avery Anderson each recorded four points as Orono defeated Alexandria 8-5 at the Runestone Community Center.

A night after Walker scored twice in the opening 24 seconds against Little Falls, Anderson gave Orono (2-0-0) the lead 47 seconds into the game. Nick Peterson tied it 11 seconds later, but the Spartans' John Engebretson and Connor Lang scored on separate power plays for a 3-1 lead after the opening period.

Keegan Lucy brought Alexandria (0-2-0) within one at 3-2 with a power-play goal 4:34 into the second period. Walker and the Cardinals' Tyler Kludgt traded goals 24 seconds apart but Easton Sankey and Rylan Schultz scored to give Orono a 6-3 lead after two period.

Lucy opened the scoring in the third but Walker and Cayden Effertz scored to give Orono an 8-4 lead. The Cardinals' Jack Breitzman completed the scoring.

Stillwater 4, Maple Grove 3

STILLWATER - Ethan Bernier's goal with 1:19 remaining lifted Stillwater past Maple Grove 4-3 at the St. Croix Valley Rec Center.

The score was tied at 2-2 heading into the third period when Stillwater's Carson Kingbay and Maple Grove's Blake Steenerson scored goals 29 seconds apart. Steenerson's goal was his second of the game.

Bernier grabbed a loose puck at the Stillwater blue line, raced past a Maple Grove defender in the neutral zone and fired a low shot past Crimson goaltender Jack Roach for the winning goal.

Stillwater goaltender Tomas Anderson was superb in making 38 stops.

Stillwater improved to 2-1-0 while Maple Grove dropped to 2-2-0.

Waconia 4, Cambridge-Isanti 3

WACONIA - Luke Puchner's power-play goal 17 seconds into overtime boosted Waconia past Cambridge-Isanti 4-3 at Waconia City Ice Arena.

The victory was Waconia's fourth in as many games to start the season, and second straight overtime triumph. Drew Vacek scored in overtime as the Wildcats beat Breck 2-1 on Wednesday.

Matt Johnson made 21 saves for Waconia and ranks among the state leaders with a .930 save percentage.

Jaxon Sibell stoped 24 shots for the Bluejackets (1-1-0).

Grand Rapids 1, Forest Lake 0

GRAND RAPIDS - An outstanding individual effort by Bauer Murphy that included an end-to-end rush and thread-the-needle assist led to a Gus Drennen goal with 29.1 seconds left and 1-0 Grand Rapids victory over Forest Lake at IRA Civic Center.

Murphy, who was knocked to the ice during his solo rush, popped back up, stole the puck and sent the puck toward Drennen, who directed it into the Forest Lake goal.

Grand Rapids improved to 4-0-0 with the victory. Forest Lake dropped to 0-2-0.
