EDEN PRAIRIE - Evan Gunderson had a goal and two assists for defending state Class 1A champion Hermantown as it opened its season Friday with a 6-3 triumph over Cretin-Derham Hall at the Eden Prairie Community Center in the opening round of the Champions Cup.
Cretin-Derham Hall, a state Class 2A tournament entrant last season, bolted to an early 3-1 lead on goals by Jake Fisher, Szilveszter Lippai and Max Bennet.
Hermantown scored the next five goals, including four in the second period, as it took control. Gunderson, a junior forward, had a goal and an assist during the Hawks' flurry.
The loss dropped the Raiders to 0-2-0.

EDEN PRAIRIE - First-period goals from Graham Greeder and Caden Sampair were enough to boost Hill-Murray past Eden Prairie 2-1 in the first round of the Champions Cup at Eden Prairie Community Center.
Eden Prairie's John Kleis scored the lone goal of the second period.
Eden Prairie had a five-minute power play late in the third but couldn't take advantage as the man advantage was shortened when the Eagles took a roughing penalty.
The game marked the season opener for both teams, regular participants in the state Class 2A tournament.

ANDOVER - Senior forward Cooper Conway scored four goals and added an assist to power the Huskies a 7-2 triumph over Moorhead at Andover Community Center in a rematch of a state Class 2A quarterfinal last March.
Andover, the defending state champion, broke open a 2-2 game in the second period with four unanswered goals - three of them coming in a span of 5:29.
K.J. Sauer, Conway and Gavyn Thoreson were the goal scorers for the Huskies (3-1-0) during the spurt.
Sophomores Mason Kraft and Garrett Lindberg scored first-period goals for the Spuds (2-2-0).

EAST GRAND FORKS - Jonny Grove scored twice and Charlie Drage had a goal and two assists as Mahtomedi surged past East Grand Forks 6-3 at East Grand Forks Civic Arena.
East Grand Forks' Brock Schultz scored the lone goal of the first period and the Green Wave and Zephyrs were tied at 2-2 midway through the second.
Mahtomedi scored four unanswered goals to build a 6-2 lead. Drage had two assists during the outburst that put the Zephyrs (3-0-0) comfortably ahead.
The loss dropped East Grand Forks to 2-2-0.

HIBBING - Tristen Babich scored twice, Beau Frider had two assists and Brayden Boyer stopped 19 shots as Hibbing/Chisholm cruised past Albert Lea 5-1 at at the Hibbing Memorial Building.
The teams were tied at 1-1 after the first period. The Bluejackets (2-2-0) scored two goals in each of the second and third periods.
Dakota Jahnke made 24 saves for Albert Lea (1-1-0).

LITTLE FALLS - Bradley Walker scored twice in the opening 24 seconds as Orono built an early lead and hung on to beat Little Falls 4-2 at Exchange Arena.
John Engebretson assisted on both Walker goals. Tommy Lewin and Brooks Fegers also scored for the Spartans, making their season debut.
Joey Welinski scored both goals for Little Falls (1-2-0).

RED LAKE FALLS - Senior forward Evan Girdler's goal 4:44 in overtime lifted Red Lake Falls past Crookston 8-7 in a wild goal-a-minute game at Cardin-Hunt Arena.
Sophomore Gavin Girdler, Evan's brother, finished with five goals, becoming the third player this season to score five in a single game. He has nine goals in two games.
The teams traded goals throughout with the exception of back-to-back goals from Crookston's Jack Doda in the second period. Doda, a senior forward, scored all three of his goals in the second. He has six goals in two games
The teams combined for eight goals in the second period alone.

BAUDETTE - Brant Baron's goal with 14.7 seconds left broke a tie and lifted Lake of the Woods past International Falls 5-3 in the latest installment of the Border Battle at Lake of the Woods Community Arena.
The Bears (1-0-0) scored four unanswered goals, including three in the final period, as they rallied from a 3-1 deficit to beat their rivals from the opposite end of the Rainy River.
Lake of the Woods' Jordan Kvernen opened the scoring 2:13 into the first period and added an empty net goal with 4 seconds remaining.
Braden Skifstad had a goal and an assist for International Falls (0-2-0).
