Hockey Night: Shakopee fends off Holy Family

Dec. 1: Sabres debut with big Section 2AA win; Cambridge-Isanti tops St. Cloud Cathedral

Shakopee 3, Holy Family 2

VICTORIA - Sophomore Cooper Simpson had a goal and an assist as Shakopee scored three unanswered goals to slip past Holy Family 3-2 on Thursday at the Victoria Recreation Center.

Simpson's goal came with 2:59 left in the third period and gave the Sabres a 3-1 lead.

Holy Family, coming off a dramatic win over Edina on Monday, got a goal from Mason Grinnell with 2:18 remaining to cut Shakopee's led to 3-2. Grinnell scored with 2:09 left Monday to lift the Fire past the Hornets.

This time the comeback bid fell short, even though Holy Family (2-1-0) outshot Section 2AA rival Shakopee 39-19, including 16-4 in the third.

Carson Steinhoff and Jackson Vogel scored second-period goals for the Sabres, who were making their season debut.

Holy Family's Tommy Agerland opened the scoring with the lone goal of the opening period. He also assisted on Grinnell's late goal.

Rochester Mayo 3, Hastings 3 (OT)

HASTINGS - Hastings' Connor Zgoda scored with 5:51 left in the third to force overtime and the Raiders' Section 1AA clash with Rochester Mayo at the Hastings Civic Arena ended in a 3-3 tie.

Blake Vandehoef gave the Raiders (0-0-1) a 1-0 lead with 3:52 left in the first, but Mayo's Cohen Ruskell tied it with 15 seconds remaining in the period.

Jon Harris scored to put Hastings ahead 2-1 lead, but Mayo responded again, this time as Mason Leimbek scored twice in 140 seconds to give the Spartans (0-2-1) a 3-2 lead after two.

Mayo outshot Hastings 10-1 in the extra period.

Cambridge-Isanti 4, St. Cloud Cathedral 1

ST. CLOUD - Three third-period goals, including two by Finn Overby, powered Cambridge-Isanti to a 4-1 win over St. Cloud Cathedral at the Municipal Athletic Complex.

Cambridge-Isanti (1-0-0) took a 1-0 lead with Luke Pierson's first-period goal. St. Cloud Cathedral (0-2-0) tied it when Cole Wang scored in the second.

Pierson scored again in the third to give the Bluejackets a 2-1 lead before Overby's first goal, via a major power play, pushed the advantage to 3-1 with 5:16 remaining. Overby's second goal lit the red light with 47 seconds left.

Jaxon Sibell stopped 24 shots for the win.

Roseville 8, South St. Paul 3

ROSEVILLE - The Steffen brothers, tied for third in the state in scoring, each had three points as Roseville cruised past South St. Paul 8-3. 

Luke Steffen scored two shorthanded goals in the first period as the Raiders (3-0-0) built a 3-0 lead. 

Landon Steffen scored in the third period and added two assists. Luke Steffen also had an assist.

The brothers, who played at Blaine last season, each have 11 points.

Joe Schaefer had a goal and two assists for South St. Paul (1-1-1).

Rogers 7, Coon Rapids 2

ROGERS - Drew Krekelberg and Dawson Jenson each scored two goals as Rogers beat Coon Rapids 7-2 at the Rogers Ice Arena.

Rogers (2-0-0) outshot Coon Rapids 65-28.

Sam Ranallo scored 11 seconds into the game for Rogers. Coon Rapids' Tyler Barnsess scored less than two minutes later to tie it at 1-1.

The Royals then scored six-straight goals, including four in the second period, to pull away. Jensen, a senior, and sophomore Parker Deschene each finished with four points.

Barsness scored both goals for Coon Rapids (1-1-0).

Mayville/Portland 5, Kittson County Central 4 (OT)

MAYVILLE, N.D. - Mayville-Portland (N.D.) scored the final three goals, including the winner from Walker McGillis, as it recorded a 5-4 overtime win over Kittson County Central.

Mayville-Portland opened the scoring but the Bearcats' Elijah Swanson and Tyler Hennen responded with goals in the final 2:40 of the first period. 

Hennen scored two goals to open the third period to break a 2-2 tie.

McGillis scored with 17 seconds left in regulation to force overtime.

Hennen, who leads the state with 12 goals and 24 points, added an assist to go with his three goals. Linemate Hayden Olsonawski added four assists and ranks second in the state with 20 points.

The loss was the first of the season for Kittson Central (3-1-0).

Duluth East 5, Bemidji 3

BEMIDJI -- Duluth East scored at even-strength, short-handed and on a power-play in the third period as the Greyhounds beat Bemidji 5-3 at the Bemidji Community Arena.

With the game tied 2-2 after two, Duluth East (1-3-0) entered the third period shorthanded after a major penalty.

Bemidji opened the third with a penalty and Wyatt Peterson scored 33 seconds into the third to give the Greyhounds the lead. Thomas Gunderson's short-handed goal 2:31 into the period pushed the lead to 4-2 and Ian Christian's power-play goal, via a major penalty, came with 5:40 remaining.

Noah Mannausau recorded a goal and an assist for the Lumberjacks (0-3-0).
