MOORHEAD - Junior forward Jace Blythe scored 1:36 into overtime to lift Moorhead past Bemidji 4-3 on Tuesday at the Moorhead Sports Center.
Blythe took a pass deep in the corner, wheeled behind the goal and and stuffed the puck into the net before Bemidji goaltender Tate Metcalf could get to the left post. The goal was the first in Blythe's varsity career, as he spent last season exclusively on the junior varsity.
The wild finish continued a long history of highly competitive games between the teams - many of them decided by a single goal in regulation or extended to in overtime. At one point in the early 2010s, the teams played a six-game stretch in which four games went to overtime and the total margin of victory was five goals.
Neither team led by more than a goal on Tuesday, and they traded goals throughout the third. Nick Yavarow put Bemidji (0-2-0) ahead 3-2 with 4:32 remaining. Ian Ness tied it for the Spuds (2-1-0) with 3:35 left.
