Hermantown's Dominic Thomas scored on a wraparound in the first period of Saturday's Class 1A championship game at Xcel Energy Center.
Zam Plante scored twice — including the game-winner — as top-seeded Hermantown outlasted No. 2 Warroad and won 3-2 in the Class 1A state championship game Saturday afternoon at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
Dominic Thomas also scored and goaltender Dane Callaway made 19 saves to help the Hawks to the fourth state title in school history.
The teams traded first-period goals. Garret Hennum opened the scoring and gave Warroad a 1-0 lead 10:45 in, but Hermantown quickly answered when Thomas wheeled around the net and beat Warriors goaltender Hampton Slukynsky to the far post 89 seconds later.
Plante put the Hawks up 2-1 55 seconds into the middle period when he blasted a turnaround shot off the crossbar and in, then after Griffin Marvin tied the score at 2-2, the Minnesota Duluth recruit batted home a Kade Kohanski pass at 3:02 to help Hermantown regain the lead.
It’s just a matter of time before Zam Plante gets one.
Or two.
The junior speedster scored twice in the first 3:02 of the second period - including the eventual game-winner quickly after Warroad had tied the game.
Kohanski drove down the outside of the ice, fed a pass to Zam Plante on the backdoor and, well, the rest is history.
