Gavyn Thoreson had two goals and an assist, and goaltender Austin Brauns turned in a 37-save effort as No. 5 Andover upset top-seeded Hill-Murray 4-2 in a Class 2A semifinal Friday night at Xcel Energy Center.
The title game appearance is the Huskies’ first in the program’s third-ever state tournament berth.
Thoreson scored the lone first-period goal when he blasted home a puck from the high slot, then, after Hill-Murray tied the score 3:14 into the middle period, Andover broke the game open.
Logan Gravink finished off a gritty play to put the Huskies in front 2-1 at 7:38 of the second before Cayden Casey took a pass from Thoreson and scored the eventual game-winner with just 10 seconds left in the stanza.
Pioneer forward Dylan Godbout scored 2:54 into the third period to give Hill-Murray a jolt, but Brauns and Andover held up for the victory.
With the second period grinding to a close, Thoreson found a loose puck with miles of space in front of him. Known for his quick trigger and finishing touch, the junior worked his way through a Hill-Murray defender on his way to the net.
Instead of shooting, Thoreson made the pass of the night.
A no-look feed landed on Casey’s tape with the entire net to shoot at. Casey didn’t miss, giving Andover what turned out to be the game-winner.
Fifth-seeded Andover will play No. 3 Maple Grove tomorrow for the Class 2A state championship.
