Matt Hard's power-play goal 2:20 into overtime helped second-seeded Warroad avoid the upset vs. No. 3 Mahtomedi and win 5-4 in the first Class 1A semifinal Friday at Xcel Energy Center.
Daimon Gardner notched a hat trick and Jayson Shaugabay had a goal and three assists to lead the Warriors offensively. Hampton Slukynsky made 18 saves in goal.
The hat trick was Gardner’s second of the tournament and gives him 45 goals on the season.
The game was a back-and-forth, penalty-filled affair. Charlie Drage and Brent Gulenchyn scored for the Zephyrs in the first period between a pair of Gardner tallies.
Gulenchyn and Drage both found the back of the net again in the first 55 seconds of the second period to put Mahtomedi up 4-2, but Warroad battled back.
Gardner batted a deflected puck in on a power play at 5:19, then Shaugabay finished a stunning individual effort to knot the game at 4-4 going into the third period.
Usually an overtime game-winner is the key moment, but not when Jayson Shaugabay plays the way he played today.
Shaugabay had plenty of highlights Friday afternoon, but his game-tying goal midway through the second period was an absolute thing of beauty.
Entering the zone on a one-on-one, Shaugabay was pulled down but still managed to get a shot off. As he regained his feet, he picked up the rebound on his backhand, settled it on his forehand and beat Mahtomedi goaltender Ben Dardis shortside.
Warroad moves onto the Class 1A championship game against the winner of No. 1 Hermantown and fifth-seeded Alexandria. Puck-drop for the small school state title contest is set for noon Saturday at Xcel Energy Center.
