Gavyn Thoreson scored 11:18 into the the second overtime period, and Austin Brauns made 44 saves to lead No. 5 Andover to a 2-1 upset win over fourth-seeded Moorhead in the Class 2A quarterfinal nightcap Thursday at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
The game, which featured the two northernmost teams in the big school field, felt like a classic northern matchup - tight-checking, physical, never-give-an inch hockey that ultimately came down to the wire.
Andover twice thought it had won the game, but both plays were waived off. The first came with 16.3 seconds left in regulation when Cayden Casey redirected a centering feed into the net before a review of the goal deemed it was kicked in. Then, in the first overtime, a loose puck was swatted over the line just after the referee had blown his whistle.
Enter Thoreson.
Easily Andover's most dangerous player all game, the junior winger sent a backhand shot into the top of the net late in the second overtime.
All the scoring in regulation came during the second period. Cooper Conway opened the scoring for Andover when he slapped home a loose puck in the slot at 5:47, but the Spuds answered at the 10:39 mark when Harper Bentz found room on an odd-man rush and buried from the right circle.
Sophomore goaltender Kai Weigel turned aside 31 Andover shots in the loss.
Thoreson, who paces the game out and seems to generate a scoring look nearly every time he touches the puck, picked a good time to turn on the jets.
Andover forced a neutral zone turnover and transitioned quickly with numbers. Thoreson flew down the wide lane, extended his stick and knocked a pass over Weigel's shoulder for the double overtime winner.
Fifth-seeded Andover gets a shot at No. 1-seeded Hill-Murray in Friday’s Class 2A semifinals at Xcel Energy Center.
