Maple Grove's Landen Gunderson had a goal and assist in the Crimson's 5-2 win over Edina Thursday at Xcel Energy Center.
Landen Gunderson, Joshua Giuliani and Finn Brink combined for four goals and nine points as No. 3 Maple Grove dispatched of unseeded Edina 5-2 in the second Class 2A quarterfinal Thursday at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
The Crimson’s top line was the first to crack the Hornets’ defensive structure and goaltender Robbie Clarkowski since Feb. 17, a streak that included Edina’s final regular-season game and its march through the Section 6 playoffs.
The teams traded first-period goals before Maple Grove grabbed the momentum in the second. Gunderson scored 4:50 in to make it 2-1, then Giuliani buried the dagger with 1:04 to play in the middle stanza.
Blake Steenerson also scored for Maple Grove on an absolute laser of a wrister off a turnover early in the third. Giuliani closed the scoring with an empty-net goal in the final minute.
Crimson goaltender Toby Hopp made 29 saves for the victory, his 16th of the season.
Eddie Revenig and Wyatt Wurst scored for Edina.
With the middle period crawling to a close, Maple Grove’s top line — the only group to generate any consistent offense for either team Thursday afternoon — provided a spark that momentarily woke the sleepy Xcel Energy Center crowd from its slumber.
Brink cruised through center, cut to the middle at the top of the right circle and left a pass for Giuliani, who picked a corner above Clarkowski’s glove to double the Crimson lead. The goal held up as the eventual game-winner.
Third-seeded Maple Grove will be the next team to try and slow down Mr. Hockey favorite Alex Bump when it squares off with unseeded Prior Lake in the first Class 2A semifinal Friday night at Xcel Energy Center.
