Sophomore Jackson Nevers’ goal late in the first period was enough to lift No. 11-2A Edina to a 1-0 victory over No. 10-2A Wayzata on Saturday at the Plymouth Ice Center.
The victory likely secures the No. 2 seed for the Hornets (17-8-0) in the upcoming Section 6AA playoffs. Wayzata is expected to get the No. 3 seed. Coaches will vote to determine the seeding order on Sunday morning. Benilde-St. Margaret’s, which beat Wayzata in the regular season, is expected to receive the No. 1 seed.
Wayzata (16-8-1) could have clinched the outright Lake Conference championship with a victory, but instead finishes in a three-way tie with Minnetonka and Eden Prairie with 16 points each. The last time the Trojans won a share of the Lake title was 2010.
Nevers drilled a shot to the right of Wazata goaltender Will Ingemann with 1:56 remaining in the first period. Riley Spindler fed the puck to Nevers, who was stationed near the left face off circle. Spindler pounced on a turnover deep in the Trojans’ zone before finding Nevers. The goal was Nevers’ eighth of the season.
There were few other such miscues in the game that saw both teams play suffocating defense supported by rock-solid goaltending. Wayzata fired 25 shots at Edina goaltender Robbie Clarkowski. Ingemann made 18 stops.
Wayzata pulled Ingemann in favor of an extra skater in the closing minutes and pounded the puck at Clarkowski during a few goalmouth scrambles, but didn’t have any grade-A chances as time expired.
The 1-0 final was the second straight for the teams’ that have met three times so far this season. Wayzata beat Edina 1-0 in overtime on Jan. 27 at Braemar Arena in Edina.
The teams also met in the championship game of the Wayzata Turkey Trot on Nov. 27 in Plymouth. Edina won 6-2, propelled by a third-period hat trick from Matt VanderVort.
