Hockey Night: Gunderson stops Thoreson penalty shot as Grand Rapids wins thriller against Andover

Feb. 8: Gentry Academy outlasts Minneapolis in shootout; Greenway's Jurganson posts 44-save shutout of Hibbing

Grand Rapids 2, Andover 1

GRAND RAPIDS - Myles Gunderson stopped Gavyn Thoreson's penalty shot attempt with no time remaining as Grand Rapids held on for a 2-1 victory over Andover on Tuesday night at the IRA Civic Center in a rematch of last season's Section 7AA championship game.

The penalty shot was awarded after Grand Rapids defenseman Easton Young was called for a delay of game penalty for freezing the puck in the crease during a wild goalmouth scramble as time expired.

Kaden Nelson's goal with 2:53 left in the second proved to be the winner.

No. 1-2A Andover (18-4-1) opened the scoring when Thoreson scored with 11:04 left in the first.

The No. 11-2A Thunderhawks (17-5-1) tied the score on Bauer Murphy's goal with 12:41 to play in the second.

Gunderson made 20 saves for Grand Rapids.

The teams are heavily favored to meet for the Section 7AA championship again this season. Andover won 3-2 a year ago to reach the state tournament for a second consecutive season.

Gentry Academy 8, Minneapolis 7 (OT)

MINNEAPOLIS - Gentry Academy's Barrett Hall scored 18 seconds into overtime to lift the Stars to an 8-7 win over No. 4-1A Minneapolis at the Parade Ice Garden.

Hall was one of three players who scored two goals for the Stars (16-3-0).

Kaden Miles and Wes Berg also scored two goals while Reese Shaw, Hall and Berg were each credited with three assists.

Evan Grimm and Jack Hanson each scored two goals for Minneapolis (16-5-1).

The teams traded goals most of the night. Miles forced overtime with his second goal of the third period coming with 1:20 left in regulation.

Greenway 3, Hibbing/Chisholm 0

COLERAINE - Greenway's Nathan Jurganson stopped 44 shots to lead Greenway to a 3-0 win over Hibbing/Chisholm at Hodgins-Berardo Arena.

The shutout was the third of the season for Jurganson as Greenway improved to (10-9-0). Hibbing/Chisholm falls to 11-12-0.

After a scoreless first period, Greenway's Wyatt Thorson and Joe Herfindahl scored to give Jurganson all the scoring he and the Raiders needed.

Jacques Villeneuve added a short-handed, empty-net goal in the third.

Centennial 1, Blaine 1 (OT)

BLAINE - Blaine's Alex Hauck and Centennial's Brock Carls traded second-periods goals as the Bengals and Cougars skated to a 1-1 tie at Fogerty Arena.

Ryan Wallin made 39 saves for Blaine (11-7-4) while Jack Fuller made 23 saves for the the No. 12-2A Cougars (15-4-2).

Centennial won the previous meeting between the two rivals 9-1 on Jan. 27.

Chisago Lakes 6, Cambridge-Isanti 3

LINDSTROM - Nicholas Helland scored the game's last two goals as Chisago Lakes scored four-straight goals to rally past Cambridge-Isanti 6-3 at the Chisago Lakes Ice Arena in a matchup of teams ranked in Class 1A's top 15.

No. 14-1A Chisago (16-3-1) scored six of the game's final seven goals.

No. 12-1A Cambridge-Isanti (16-5-1) opened the game with goals by Jakob Olson and Seth Terhell for a 2-0 lead. Chisago Lakes answered with goals by Nikolas Jinks and Ryan Schmidt.

The Bluejackets took a 3-2 lead with Luke Pierson's goal 51 seconds into the third only to see Jinks tie the game midway through the period.

The Wilcats took a 4-3 lead on Sage Senne's goal with 4:49 left in regulation. Helland scored his first goal 30 seconds later and then capped the scoring with an empty-net goal with 1:10 to play.

Jack Hanson stopped 41 shots to lead the Chisago Lakes' comeback.

Mahtomedi 6, Breck 0

STILLWATER - Ben Dardis made 23 saves for his 18th career shutout as Mahtomedi defeated Breck 6-0 at the St. Croix Valley Recreation Center.

The shutout was the third of the season for Dardis as the No. 3-1A Zephyrs improved to 11-10-1.

Brent Gulenchyn scored two goals for Mahtomedi.

Breck falls to 7-13-0.

Holy Angels 6, Buffalo 4

BUFFALO - Holy Angels scored the game's last three goals as the Stars ralled for a 6-4 win over Buffalo at the Buffalo Civic Center.

Henry Lechner scored two goals, including the go-ahead goal with 4:22 to play, to lift Holy Angels (18-3-1).

Buffalo (8-13-0) took a 4-3 lead 24 seconds into the third period on Jimmy Winter's goal. Holy Angels tied the game on a power-play goal by Nik Johnson before Lechner gave the Stars a 5-4 lead.

The Stars' Charlie Cline rounded out the scoring with a goal with 31 seconds remaining.

Delano 4, Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato 3

DELANO - Delano's Gunnar Paulson scored a short-handed goal with 15 seconds left in regulation to cap a three-goal, third-period rally as the Tigers defeated Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato 4-3 at the Delano Area Sports Arena.

No. 5-1A Delano (15-6-0) trailed 2-1 after two periods as the Dragons' Grant Grochow scored a power-play goal with 3:19 left in the second.

The Tigers tied the scored when Aaron Lewis scored with 11:24 left in the third. Bruce Halonen scored his second goal of the night with four minutes to play but Gavyn Lund tied the game 41 seconds later to set the stahe for Paulson's game-winning goal.

No. 20-1A Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato falls to 13-8-1.
