The stretch run to the playoffs continues with all sorts of matchups that will impact playoff seeding, none more so than Tuesday's showdown between Andover and Grand Rapids.
The rest of the week offers plenty more high-profile games, including challenges to the 14-game win streaks currently held by both Hastings and Benilde-St. Margaret's.
Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato (13-7-1) and top scorer Zachary Zwilling (20 goals) cracked our top 20 in Class 1A this week at No. 20, and the Dragons are poised for another big jump if they can knock off No. 5-1A Delano (14-6-0) and Gunnar Paulson (15 goals) tonight. ... It's believed that Red Lake Falls (14-6-0) has never defeated No. 18-1A Thief River Falls (10-10-0) in a series that dates to the mid-1950s. Could the winless drought end Thursday? ... No. 9-1A Little Falls (19-3-0) has tailed off somewhat after a blistering start to the season. But the Flyers still possess one of the state's scoring leaders in Matt Filippi (second in points with 70), an asset they'll surely need Thursday when they meet No. 6-1A Detroit Lakes (16-4-0). ... None of the Lake Conference teams have fewer than seven losses, and No. 9-2A Wayzata (13-7-1), the current leader of the Lake pack, faces No. 14-2A Eden Prairie (12-9-0) and super sophomore Teddy Townsend (34 points) in a game that will help determine the conference champion.
