Hockey Night: Wayzata prevails over Edina in defensive struggle

Jan. 27: Cambridge-Isanti hands Little Falls just its second loss; Breck stuns Minneapolis; Centennial routs Blaine

Wayzata 1, Edina 0 (OT)

EDINA - John Mattson scored 29 seconds into overtime Thursday night as No. 8-2A Wayzata beat No. 7-2A Edina 1-0 at Braemar Arena.

The Trojans scored the winning goal when a shot by Kasen Sauer rang off the right goalpost and ricocheted directly to Mattson streaking into the Hornets' zone. The senior forward quickly fired the puck into the open left side of the net before Edina goaltender Robbie Clarkowski could recover.

Clarkowski finished with 36 saves for Edina (12-6-0). Will Ingemann had 29 saves to earn the shutout for Wayzata (12-5-1).

Wayzata evened the season series between the Lake Conference and Section 6AA rivals at 1-1-0, as Edina won the first meeting 6-2 on Nov. 27. The teams play again Feb. 19 in Plymouth.

Cambridge-Isanti 4, Little Falls 3 (OT)

LITTLE FALLS - Finn Overby scored 3:36 into overtime as No. 14-1A Cambridge-Isanti beat No. 4-1A Little Falls 4-3 at Exchange Arena, dealing the Flyers just their second loss of the season.

Overby's winner followed another clutch goal for the Bluejackets (14-3-0), who forced the overtime when Will O'Donovan scored shorthanded with 53 seconds left in regulation.  

Hayden Johnson and Matt Filippi scored in the third period to put the Flyers (17-2-0) ahead 3-2.

Cambridge-Isanti goaltender Jaxon Sibell stopped 44 of 46 shots before exiting late in the third. Jason Hosch played the final 8:36, including overtime, and stopped 15 of 16 shots.

The outcome leaves Hermantown as the state's only team with one loss.

Breck 4, Minneapolis 3

DATELINE - Luke Kern scored with 1:34 remaining to lift unranked Breck to a 4-3 upset victory over No. 5-1A Minneapolis at the Parade Ice Garden.

Nathan Miller tied the score with 3:52 remaining for the Mustangs, who won for just the fifth time this season.

The loss halted a five-game unbeaten streak for Minneapolis (12-4-1).

Jack Thomson made 40 saves for Breck (5-10-0).

New Ulm 6, Luverne 0

NEW ULM - Braxten Hoffmann and Taylor Hansen each scored twice as New Ulm continued its domination of Big South Conference opponents by beating Luverne 6-0 at the New Ulm Civic Center.

New Ulm improved to 12-0-0 in the Big South and 15-5-0 overall with the victory. Luverne suffered just its second conference loss, dropping to 8-2-0 in the Big South and 8-8-0 overall.

New Ulm's Dawson Sellner made 24 saves to earn the shutout.

Centennial 9, Blaine 1

CIRCLE PINES - Junior Petyon Blair scored four goals as No. 12-21 Centennial dispatched of rival No. 20-2A Blaine 9-1 at the Centennial Sports Center.

Blair bumped his season goal total to 17 with the outburst, second on the Cougars (13-3-1) behind senior Owen Van Tassel, who had a goal and two assists.

Centennial led 2-1 after the first, then took control by scoring the first three goals of the second period.

Luke Steffen scored the lone goal for Blaine (10-4-3).

The Cougars outshot the Bengals, 48-20.

Benilde-St. Margaret's 5, Holy Angels 0

ST. LOUIS PARK - Sophomore Mason McElroy made 19 saves to earn his ninth-straight victory - and third shutout - in No. 4-2A Benilde-St. Margaret's 5-0 win over Holy Angels at the St. Louis Park Rec Center.

Senior Adam Marshall scored twice for the Red Knights (13-4-0), giving him eight goals in his last four games. 

The victory was the Red Knights' 11th straight.

Senior Bryce Hess stopped 41 of 46 shots for Holy Angels (14-3-0).

Northfield 9, Albert Lea 4

NORTHFIELD - No. 17-1A Northfield scored the final five goals - four of them coming in the third period - as it pulled away for a 9-4 win over Big 9 Conference foe No. 20-1A Albert Lea at the Northfield Ice Arena.

Sophomore Kamden Kaiser scored three goals, giving him 20 this season, for the Raiders (11-4-1). 

The win against a top-20 opponent was the second in as many outings for the Raiders, who beat No. 16-1A Mankato East 4-3 in overtime Tuesday in another showdown between top Big 9 teams. 

Joseph Yoon had a goal and two assists to lead Albert Lea (13-4-0).
