Hockey Night: Wayzata completes Canadian border sweep

Jan. 22: Trojans beat Warroad 3-0 a day after topping Roseau; Hill-Murray and Grand Rapids tie; Prior Lake too much for East Grand Forks in Hockey Day showdown

Wayzata 3, Warroad 0

WARROAD - Jake Mattson scored twice as No. 12-2A Wayzata (11-5-1) completed a Canadian border swing sweep by handing No. 2-1A Warroad (16-2-0) a 3-0 loss at the Gardens Arena.

The Trojans won at Roseau 6-4 Friday.

Mattson scored his first goal with 8:46 remaining in the first period after battling in front of the net.

Brit Alstead gave Wayzata a 2-0 lead with 5:22 left in the second period as the Trojans held a 21-11 lead in shots on goal.

Mattson scored with 2:08 to play for the final score. Wayzata outshot Warroad 30-18.

Hill-Murray 4, Grand Rapids 4 (OT)

GRAND RAPIDS - Joey DelGreco's power-play four minutes into the third period allowed No. 8-2A Grand Rapids to tie the game and force overtime as the Thunderhawks and No. 3-2A Hill-Murray finished in a 4-4 tie.

The Pioneers (12-3-1) took a 1-0 lead when Brendan Bonin scored 83 seconds into the game. Grand Rapids (13-4-1) answered with Easton Young's power-play goal at 2:51 of the first.

The Thunderhawks then took a 2-1 lead when Young scored again with the man advantage with 1:46 left in the opening period.

A third power-play goal, this one by Henry Sterle, gave Grand Rapids a 3-1 lead midway in the second. However, Hill-Murray scored three goals in 79 seconds to take a 4-3 lead after two.

Leo Gruba started the scoring run with a power-play goal with 2:01 to play in the second. Nate Hardy scored 40 seconds later before Logan Hensler scored with 42 seconds left in the period.

Grand Rapids finished 4-for-4 on power plays.

Prior Lake 7, East Grand Forks 1

MANKATO - Will Schumacher's hat trick lifted Prior Lake (9-8-0) to a 7-1 win over East Grand Forks at Blakeslee Stadium on the Minnesota State University campus. The game was part of the Hockey Day event and was played outdoors and televised regionally.

Sam Rice gave the Lakers a 1-0 lead when he collected an errant shot off the back wall and deflected his shot off the East Grand Forks' goaltender and in the net.

Alex Bump then made it 2-0 with a short-handed goal before the No. 12-1A Greenwave (5-10-0) scored when Sam Schumacher scored his first varsity goal on a pass from Jaksen Panzer.

Will Schumacher gave Prior Lake a 3-1 lead before Riley Dueber's shot deflected off the crossbar to give the Lakers a 4-1 lead.

Will Schumacher made it 5-1 in the third period when he beat the goaltender high on the glove side. He later completed the hat trick to make it 7-1.

Chaska 4, Chanhassen 2

CHANHASSEN - Seniors Gavin Nahan and Bennet Jax each had a goal and an assist as Chaska beat west metro rival Chanhassen 4-2 to complete a sweep of the series between the west metro rivals.

Chaska (10-5-0) led 2-1 after the first on goals by Blake Markwell and Nahan. Jax scored the only goal of the second to make it 3-1 and junior defenseman Sam Rinzel, a Minnesota commit, put the Hawks up 4-0 with a goal 9 seconds into the third.

Col Baker and Jack Christ scored for Chanhassen (11-4-1), which had lost just once in its previous 13 games.

Chaska beat Chanhassen 3-2 on Nov. 30.

Simley 2, Mound Westonka 2 (OT)

MOUND - Jayar Luedke and Casey Seidl each had a goal and an assist for No. 20-1A Simley and Mason Evenson stopped 34 shots for Mound Westonka as the teams skated to a 2-2 overtime tie.

Simley (12-6-1) led 2-1 after the first. After a scoreless second period Ethan Dominy scored for Mound Westonka (7-9-0) 6:42 into the third.

Simley goaltender Logan Suchy made 37 saves.

Blake 5, St. Thomas Academy 3

DATELINE - Carter Krenke had three assists and Jonah Spaeth made 33 saves to help Blake to a 5-3 upset victory over No. 13-2A St. Thomas Academy.

The loss was the second straight and third in four games for St. Thomas Academy (10-8-0). Blake (9-7-0) has won five of its last seven, with the two losses coming against top-20 ranked Class 2A schools Roseau and Blaine.

Reese Hack scored what proved to be the winning goal when he put the Bears ahead 4-1 early in the second period. 

The Cadets lost despite outshooting the Bears 36-15.
