Hockey Night: Little Falls drops from ranks of unbeatens

Jan. 15: Fergus Falls hands Flyers their first loss; Rosemount topples Lakeville South; Gentry Academy wins rematch with Holy Angels

Fergus Falls 5, Little Falls 1

FERGUS FALLS - Michael DeBrito and Kellen Stenstrom each scored two goals as Fergus Falls handed Little Falls its first loss of the season Saturday with a 5-1 victory at the Fergus Falls Community Arena.

Little Falls and No. 2-1A Warroad were the state's final two unbeaten teams entering Saturday's action. Warroad lost 2-1 to Hermantown in overtime.

Stenstrom gave No. 13-1A Fergus Falls (10-5-0) a 1-0 lead 70 seconds into the game. Shane Zierden pushed the Otters' lead to 2-0 with a power-play goal with 9:21 to play.

No. 4-1A Little Falls (15-1-0) got on the board when Hayden Johnson scored at 13:18 in the second. However, Fergus Falls scored three times in less than three minutes to ice the game.

DeBrito scored twice to give the Otters a 4-1 lead. Stenstrom's second goal came seven seconds after DeBrito's second tally for the 5-1 final.

Little Falls edged the Otters 2-1 in overtime in the 2021 Section 6A title game.

Rosemount 2, Lakeville South 1

LAKEVILLE - Defenseman Jake Toll scored twice as unranked Rosemount (8-5-0) upended No. 6-2A Lakeville South (9-3-0) 2-1 at Hasse Arena.

Toll's goals came in the first and third periods. Hans Hedlund added two assists for the Irish, who have also defeated No. 1-2A Andover.

Gentry Academy 4, Holy Angels 1

RICHFIELD - Barrett Hall scored two short-handed goals in the second period as No. 19-2A Gentry Academy (11-3-0) defeated Holy Angels (12-2-1) 4-1 Richfield Ice Arena.

The game was a rematch from Wednesday night's 5-4 overtime win for Holy Angels.

After a scoreless first, Gentry's Wes Berg scored on a wraparound goal 74 seconds into the middle period. After a tripping penalty, Hall grabbed a loose puck for a breakaway goal with 11:31 to go.

Hall then made a steal and scored his second short-handed goal with 4:54 left in the second.

After Holy Angels freshman Henry Lechner scored, Reese Shaw gave Gentry a 4-1 lead with 12:43 remaining.

Finn Wilson made 26 saves for Gentry.

Rogers 5, Maple Grove 4

ROGERS - Hogan Sinjem scored with 2:55 left to complete a three-goal rally and lift No. 17-2 Rogers to a 5-4 upset win over No. 8-2A Maple Grove at the Rogers Ice Arena.

Maple Grove (9-5-1) took a 2-0 lead on first-period goals by Finn Brink and Landen Gunderson.

Sam Ranallo scored twice in the second for the Royals (10-6-1), sandwiching a goal by Maple Grove's Connor Stelljes.

After Clayton Fischer gave Maple Grove a 4-2 lead, Dominick Palumbo scored to start the Royals' comeback. Miken Miller tied the game with 6:28 to play, setting the stage for Sinjem's short-handed, game-winning goal.

Hill-Murray 3, Mahtomedi 2 (OT)

STILLWATER - Brendan Bonin scored 46 seconds into overtime to give Hill-Murray a 3-2 win over Mahtomedi at the St. Croix Recreation Center.

The Pioneers (11-3-0) and Mahtomedi (7-6-2) traded goals in the first and third periods. No. 3-2A Hill-Murray opened the scoring with a goal by Dylan Godbout before the Zephyrs' Jonny Grove answered.

No. 3-1A Mahtomedi took a 2-1 lead with a power-play goal by David Wolsfeld with 4:13 to play but the Pioneers forced overtime when Brady Ingebritson scored with 38 seconds remaining.

Red Wing 3, Albert Lea 2

ALBERT LEA - Red Wing snapped Albert Lea's eight-game win streak with a 3-2 victory at the Albert Lea City Arena.

Casey Larson's power-play goal, his second goal of the game, with 2:09 to play gave the Wingers a 3-1 lead. Albert Lea's Elijah Farris scored with 23 seconds left but it was not enough.

Larson and Tristen Peterson scored in the first period for Red Wing (6-8-0). Joseph Yoon Albert Lea (10-3-0) got the Tigers on the board with a power-play goal in the second.

Red Wing's Dixon Ehlers, who ranks fifth in the state with a .937 save percentage, stopped 39 shots while Albert Lea's Dakota Jahnke, also among the state's top 10 in save percentage, had 23 saves.

Bagley/Fosston 7, Breckenridge/Wahpeton 0

BAGLEY - Kassandra Fontaine stopped 31 shots as Bagley/Fosston (8-7-1) recorded a 7-0 win over Breckenridge/Wahpeton (0-11-0) at the Bagley Youth Hockey Arena.

Fontaine, coming off a superb performance Thursday night against Duluth Marshall, recorded her second shutout of the season. She has allowed only two goals in the last three games as the Flyers have won six-straight.

Markus Olson had a hat trick to go with two assists while Logan Merschman recorded a goal and three assists.

White Bear Lake 8, Park of Cottage Grove 2

VADNAIS HEIGHTS - Tyler Bishop scored nine seconds into the game as White Bear Lake (7-5-0) scored three first-period goals and recorded an 8-2 win over Park of Cottage Grove at the TCO Sports Garden.

The Bears got two goals each from Charlie Olson and Tyler Kotzmcher. Olsen and Kotzmacher's first goals both came in the first period as White Bear Lake took a 3-0 lead.

Park of Cottage Grove (7-5-0) cut the lead to one, 3-2 before Joe Belise scored in the second for the Bears.

White Bear Lake scored four times in the third as Olsen and Kotzmacher netted their seconds goals of the game.
