Jan. 14: Hermantown, Warroad win big on eve of their Class 1A showdown; Cambridge-Isanti keeps streak alive

Edina 7, St. Thomas Academy 0

MENDOTA HEIGHTS - No. 9-2A Edina erupted for five first-period goals and cruised to a 7-0 victory over No. 13-2A St. Thomas Academy Friday at St. Thomas Ice Arena.

St. Thomas Academy (9-6-0) beat the Hornets (9-5-0) 4-1 Dec. 30, but it was all Edina in the rematch. Willy Johnson scored a goal and added two assists in the first period.

A.J. Doll and Trey Fechko scored in the second period and each finished with two goals.

Edina outshot St. Thomas Academy, 39-16.

Hermantown 8, St. Cloud Cathedral 0

ST. CLOUD - Junior Zam Plante made a triumphant return to the Hermantown lineup, scoring twice and adding an assist as the No. 1-1A Hawks cruised to an 8-0 triumph over No. 17-1A St. Cloud Cathedral at the Municipal Athletic Complex. 

Plante, who missed eight games after being injured in the first period against Wayzata on Dec. 10, put the Hawks  (11-1-0) ahead 4-0 early in the second period and made it 6-0 with another goal midway through the second.

Kade Kohanski also scored twice for Hermantown as it prepped for Saturday's showdown with No. 2-1A Warroad by outshooting the Crusaders (9-6-0) 50-5.

Warroad 16, Crookston 0

CROOKSTON - Daimon Gardner, Matt Hard and Todd Powassin each scored three goals as No. 2-1A Warroad remained one of the state's two unbeaten teams by rolling to a 16-0 victory over Crookston.

Gardner and Powassin each scored one goal in each period. Gardner added four assists for a seven-point performance that gives him 50 points this season, third most in the state.

Hard and Jayson Shaugabay each had six points for the Warriors (15-0-0).

Warroad outshot Crookston (1-11-1) 66-8 as it tuned up for Saturday's showdown with No. 1-1A Hermantown.

Cambridge-Isanti 3, Pine City 2 (OT)

ISANTI - Peyton Andrews scored 5:49 into overtime as No. 12-1A Cambridge-Isanti beat Pine City 3-2 at Isanti Ice Arena.

Will O'Donovan and Seth Terhell also scored for the Bluejackets, and freshman goaltender Jaxon Sibell made 27 saves as he remained unbeaten in 11 career starts.

Cambridge-Isanti (12-2-0) has won 12 straight.

McCall Leger opened the scoring in the first period for Pine City (5-11-0) and McCoy Leger's goal with 5:57 remaining in the third forced the overtime period.

Mason Olson made 38 saves for the Dragons.
