Hockey Night: St. Cloud Cathedral earns Granite City bragging rights

Dec. 30: Early goals propel Crusaders past St. Cloud; Rosemount stuns Andover; Denfeld dominates home tourney

St. Cloud Cathedral 3, St. Cloud 0

ST. CLOUD - Nicholas Hwang and Nolan Widman each scored in the game's first 3:45 to lift St. Cloud Cathedral to a 3-0 win over intracity rival St. Cloud on Thursday in the third round of the Granite City Classic Showcase at the Municipal Athletic Complex.

Hwang scored 1:56 into the game and Widman gave the Crusaders (7-3-0) a 2-0 lead at 3:45.

John Hirschfeld continued the early scoring streak by netting a goal 31 seconds into the second period for the 3-0 lead.

Cathedral sophomore goaltender Nick Hansen made 19 saves to earn the shutout. Ben Condon made 20 saves for St. Cloud (3-6-2).

Rogers 4, Wayzata 3

ST. LOUIS PARK - Junior defenseman Trent Peluf scored a power-play goal with 1:21 remaining to lift Rogers (6-5-1) to a 4-3 win over No. 5-2A Wayzata (6-4-1) in third-round action at the Tradition in the Park held in the St. Louis Park Rec Center.

The back-and-forth contest saw three ties, including one with 3:46 left to play after Wayzata's Luke Miller scored on the power play.

Rogers' Hogan Sinjem opened the scoring on a breakaway. He later tied the game 2-2 and gave the Royals a 3-2 lead with 8:52 remaining.

Sam Ranallo added two assists.

Wayzata outshot Rogers 33-22.

Rosemount 3, Andover 2

BLOOMINGTON - Andrew Murphy made 30 saves as Rosemount used a fast start earn a 3-2 upset victory over Andover (9-2-1) in a third-round game of The B.I.G. Tradition at the Bloomington Ice Garden.

Hans Hedlund and Ryan Roszak scored first-period goals as the Irish (5-4-0) surged to a 2-0 lead. 

Weston Knox's power-play goal 1 minute into the second period pulled the Huskies to within 2-1, but Rosemount answered with what proved to be the game winner by Jake Peterson just more than 6 minutes later.

Duluth Denfeld 8, Anoka 0

DULUTH - Andy Larson scored four goals as No. 6-1A Duluth Denfeld (9-2-0) defeated Anoka 8-0 to win the championship game of the Heritage Holiday Classic at Heritage Sports Center.

The Hunters ran through their home tourney with a goal differential of 22-1. Denfeld has now won eight-straight games.

Larson scored the game's first three goals and then added an assist on Simon Davidson's second goal as Denfeld built a 5-0 lead. After Cooper and Connor McClure each scored, Larson completed the scoring before the second period ended.

Anoka falls to 3-6-0.

Rochester Mayo 6, Fargo South/Shanley 4

ROCHESTER - Rochester Mayo (6-2-0) scored the game's first four goals and held off Fargo South/Shanley's late rally to win 6-4 and pick up the Rochester Kiwanis Hockey Festival Gold Division championship at Graham Arena.

Fargo South/Shanley (7-2-0) beat Mayo 3-1 Tuesday in an opening-round game.

Sam Jacobson and Jacob Brown scored in the first period as Mayo outshot the Bruins, ranked No. 4 in North Dakota, 12-2.

Cohen Ruskell and Mason Leimbek gave Mayo a 4-0 lead before Fargo South/Shanley scored back-to-back power-play goals. Matt Siems scored with 1:36 left in the second period to make it 5-2. Fargo South/Shanley outshot Mayo 21-8 in the second.

Fargo South/Shanley cut the lead to 5-3 and had a chance to get within one, but Mayo killed a penalty and then got a goal by Frank Goodman for a 6-3 lead with 5:38 remaining.

Tate Cothern stopped 36 of 40 shots for Mayo.

St. Thomas Academy 4, Edina 1

PRIOR LAKE - St. Thomas Academy (6-5-0) scored the game's first two goals as the Cadets defeated Edina (7-3-0) 4-1 in the Hockey for Life Classic's third round at the Dakotah! Ice Center.

Brooks Bond scored on the power play with 14:34 to play in the first period as STA took a 1-0 lead. Will Skahan scored 1:57 into the second period as the Cadets took a 2-0 lead.

After Jackson Nevers' goal brought Edina within one, 2-1, Tommy Cronin scored on the power play with 1:42 left in the period to give the Cadets a 3-1 lead.

Luke Candon made it 4-1 with a goal with 2:48 to play.

STA outshot Edina 26-16.

Providence Academy 5, Sartell-St. Stephen 4 (OT)

ST. CLOUD - Sophomore forward Jack Larson scored 2:32 into overtime to lift No. 16-1A Providence Academy to a 5-4 victory over Sartell-St. Stephen in a Granite City Classic Showcase third-round game at Municipal Athletic Complex.

The teams traded goals throughout, with Providence Academy's Brandon Sattler opening the back-and-forth scoring early in the first period.

Sartell-St. Stephen (6-3-0) got a hat trick from Tory Lund, whose third-period goal forced the extra session.

John Reller had a goal and an assist to lead Providence Academy (9-2-0).

Wadena-Deer Creek 5, Northern Lakes 4

LITTLE FALLS - Cole Woods scored with 5:12 to play to give Wadena-Deer Creek a 5-4 win over No. 11-1A Northern Lakes in the Little Falls Holiday Classic's third round at Exchange Arena.

Wadena-Deer Creek (8-4-0) scored the game's first four goals before Northern Lakes (5-4-0) responded with four goals, three coming in the third period.

Aaron Sutherland scored two goals for WDC and was credited with an assist on Woods' game-winner.

Maple Grove 7, St. Michael-Albertville 2

ST. LOUIS PARK - Clayton Fischer's four-point night (2 goals, 2 assists) led No. 6-2A Maple Grove as the Crimson recorded a 7-2 win over No. 19- St. Michael-Albertville (5-5-0) in third-round play of the Tradition in the Park, held at the St. Louis Park Rec Center.

Landen Gunderson added a goal and two assists for Maple Grove (7-3-1), which saw six players score in the contest.
