Hockey Night: Strand, Roseau remain on hot streak

Dec. 29: Rams overpower Mahtomedi; Grand Rapids shuts out Minnetonka; Fletcher's hat trick boosts Prairie Centre to OT victory

Roseau 5, Mahtomedi 1

ROSEAU - Senior forward Max Strand scored twice and added three assists as No. 8-2A Roseau overpowered No. 3-1A Mahtomedi Wednesday in a Roseau Holiday Classic second-round game at Roseau Memorial Arena.

Strand's latest outburst gives him 22 goals and 19 assists for 41 points, the most in the state.

Gavin Gunderson also scored twice for the Rams (10-1-0), who have won 10 straight.

Roseau scored three power-play goals and outshot Mahtomedi 36-18. Standout Mahtomedi goaltender Ben Dardis finished with 31 saves.

Grand Rapids 3, Minnetonka 0

MINNETONKA - Kaden Nelson gave No. 10-2A Grand Rapids (9-3-0) a 1-0 lead 3:01 into the contest and the Thunderhawks recorded a 3-0 win over No. 12-2A Minnetonka (6-4-1) at the Pagel Activity Center.

Will Stauffer scored with 116 seconds left in the opening period for a 2-0 lead. Justin Kerr scored 76 seconds into the second period for the final margin

Myles Gunderson stopped 18 shots for the shutout.

Prairie Centre 4, Park Rapids 3 (OT)

BENSON - Junior forward Eli Fletcher scored on a breakaway 34 seconds into overtime to lift Prairie Centre to a 4-3 triumph over Park Rapids in the third-place game of the MBA Storm Holiday Classic at the Benson Civic Center.

Fletcher's overtime goal completed his hat trick, giving him 18 goals this season for the Stars (3-8-0).

Jaxson Lund had three goals for Park Rapids, which also had Joey Hillukka record three assists.

Prairie Centre goaltender Joe Nedoroscik made 25 saves to earn the victory over the Panthers (4-8-0).

North Shore 2, Ely 1

PROCTOR - North Shore scored twice in the final 2:24 to spoil a brilliant goaltending performance by Ely's Chase Sandberg and lift the Storm to a 2-1 win over the Timberwolves (2-7-0) in a Bill McGann Holiday Classic second-round game at the St. Luke's Sports and Event Center.

All the scoring came in the third period. Ely's Deegan Richards scored 5:42 into the period. Zach Libal and Nate Bilben scored for North Shore (3-5-0), with Bilben's winner coming with 49 seconds remaining.

Sandberg finished with 56 saves.

Holy Angels 4, Minneapolis 3 (OT)

ST. PAUL - Ricky Nelson scored in overtime as Holy Angels secured a 4-3 victory over No. 9-1A Minneapolis in the championship game of the Herb Brooks Holiday Classic - Gold at the TRIA Rink.

Ryan Welsch added two goals for Holy Angels (9-1-1) and Bryce Hess finished with 30 saves.

Jack Hanson scored twice for Minneapolis (8-3-0).

Eau Claire North (Wis.) 4, Pine City Area 1

ST. PAUL - Eau Claire North scored three times in the third period to break away for a 4-1 win over Pine City Area (4-8-0) in the championship game of the Herb Brooks Holiday Classic - Silver at TRIA Rink.

After Nick Thompson gave North (8-3-0) a 2-1 lead 73 seconds into the third period, Noah and Gabe Bestul each scored for the final margin.

Benilde-St. Margaret's 3, Maple Grove 2

DATELINE - Tristan Sarsland scored with 0.3 seconds left to lift No. 9-2A Benilde-St. Margaret's to a 3-2 win over No. 6-2A Maple Grove. Sarsland's goal came during a 5-on-3 power play.

Peter Giertsen tied the score for the Red Knights with 4:55 left.

Adam Marshall got Benilde-St. Margaret's (6-4-0) on the board 2:54 into the game only to see Maple Grove (6-3-1) net two goals for a 2-1 lead after the second period. Luke Margenau and Josh Giuliani scored for the Crimson.
