Most of the state's top-ranked big-school teams are assembling in the metro area this week for three-day post-Christmas tournaments.
Three events in particular -- the B.I.G. Tradition at the Bloomington Ice Garden, the Hockey for Life Classic at the Dakotah! Ice Center in Prior Lake and the Tradition in the Park at the St. Louis Park Rec Center -- boast a preponderance of the power brokers.
While we selected some of our top games this week from those tournaments, we found several other intriguing matchups from tournament and non-tournament games outside the metro and across the state.
No. 12-2A Minnetonka (6-3-1) and sophomore scoring leader Javon Moore (6 goals) hosts rankings neighbor No. 13-2A Moorhead (5-5-0) on Wednesday at the Pagel Activity Center. … No. 3-2A Mahtomedi (4-4-0) and standout goaltender Ben Dardis face No. 8-2A Roseau (8-1-0) and state scoring leader Max Strand (18 goals), who has hat tricks in four of his last five games. … Kittson County Central (3-3-1) and No. 20-1A New Ulm (6-1-0), small-school teams hailing from opposite ends of the state, meet on Wednesday in a second-round game in the Fergus Falls Holiday Classic. … No. 3 Lakeville South (7-0-0) and No. 2 Edina (6-1-0) square off in a New Year’s Day special — the only game scheduled on Saturday — at Braemar Arena.
