Hockey Night: St. Thomas Academy wins second of the season against No. 1 CDH

Dec. 21: Cadets rally beat rival Cretin-Derham Hall; Stillwater goaltender outduels Mahtomedi's Dardis; Gentry Academy survives scare against Greenway

St. Thomas Academy 5, Cretin-Derham Hall 4

MENDOTA HEIGHTS - No. 19-2A St. Thomas Academy (4-4-0) scored four unanswered goals in the third period as it rallied for a 5-4 victory over No. 1-2A Cretin-Derham Hall (5-2-0) Tuesday in a matchup of new Section 3AA rivals at St. Thomas Ice Arena.

St. Thomas Academy has dealt Cretin-Derham Hall both its losses this season, and the Raiders were No. 1 in Class 2A in the Legacy Hockey Power Rankings both times. The Cadets beat the Raiders 4-3 Nov. 27.

Cretin-Derham Hall led 3-1 entering the third, when St. Thomas Academy erupted for four unanswered goals in a span of 7:50 to take a 5-3 lead.

Jack Strobel's goal proved to be the winner, as Cretin-Derham Hall's Gabe Rasmussen scored with 1:22 remaining to pull the Raiders to within a goal.

St. Thomas Academy goaltender Matt Schoephoerster finished with 40 saves.

Stillwater 2, Mahtomedi 1

STILLWATER - Ty Tuccitto scored with 2:03 left in overtime to lift Stillwater (4-1-0) to a 2-1 victory over No. 2-1A Mathomedi (4-3-0) in a matchup of teams that share the St. Croix Valley Recreation Center.

Stillwater's Aidan Anderson scored in the first period and Mahtomedi's Charle Drage scored in the second to account for the regulation goals.

Stillwater goaltender Tomas Anderson outdueled Mahtomedi star Ben Dardis, making 39 saves to Dardis' 28.

Providence Academy 3, Holy Family 2

VICTORIA - Louie Wehmann scored twice for No. 18-1A Providence Academy (6-2-0) as it secured a 3-2 victory over Holy Family (3-6-0) at the Victoria Recreation Center.

Wehmann, a sophomore forward who has eight goals this season, scored with 40 seconds left in the opening period to put the Lions ahead 2-1. He scored again with 1:14 left in the second to make it 3-1.

Holy Family's Ethan Hall scored with 1:01 left to pull the Fire to within a goal.

Evan Villagomez made 33 saves for Providence Academy.

Gentry Academy 5, Greenway 4

COLERAINE - Peter Barber's goal with 5:38 remaining boosted No. 16-2A Gentry Academy (5-1-0) to a come-from-behind 5-4 victory over Greenway (3-1-0) at Hodgins-Berardo Arena.

Greenway took a 4-2 lead early in the second period on a goal by Jace Kammeeier. 

Brendon Hammer started the Stars' comeback with a goal late in the third period, and Barrett Hall scored 1:18 into the second to tie it at 4-4.

Greenway goaltender Nathan Jurgansen made 52 saves as the Raiders were outshot 57-22.

Moorhead 5, St. Michael-Albertville 4

MOORHEAD - Carson Triggs scored twice, and his goal 6:38 into the third period proved to be the winner as No. 13-2A Moorhead (5-5-0) hung on for a 5-4 win over No. 18-2A St. Michael-Albertville (5-2-0).

Karson Raymond and Tyler Hansen scored in the third period as the Knights rallied, but they couldn't beat Moorhead's Kai Weigel (25 save) for the tying goal.

St. Paul Highland Park 3, Rochester John Marshall 2 (OT)

ROCHESTER - Emmett Eischens scored with five seconds remaining in overtime as Highland Park (4-4-1) secured the dramatic 3-2 triumph over Rochester John Marshall (4-4-0) at the Rochester Recreation Center.

Highland Park forced the overtime period when Peter Douba scored with 1 minute left in regulation.

Senior Graham Zuehlke stopped 34 of 36 shots for the Scots.

International Falls 6, Ely 4

ELY - International Falls let a comfortable three-goal lead slip away, then had to rally with three third-period goals -- including the winner from Braden Skifstad in the final minute -- to beat Ely 6-4 at the Ely Ice Arena.

Nate Dremmel scored twice for International Falls (1-4-0), which led 3-0 early in the second period. Jace Huntbach helped Ely (2-4-0) rally by scoring two of the Timberwolves' four unanswered goals in the second period.
