Hockey Night: Eden Prairie deals Edina its first loss

Dec. 18: Hermantown shuts out Mahtomedi in Class 1A showdown; Longtime Winona coach Fran McDevitt honored

Eden Prairie 6, Edina 2

EDINA - Ryan Andor, Jake Luloff and Trent Stansberry each has a goal and an assist as No. 16-2A Eden Prairie (4-3-0) stunned No. 1-2A Edina 6-2 Saturday in the third round of the Edina Holiday Classic at Braemar Arena, handing the Hornets their first loss of the season.

Stansberry, Luloff and Phil Feinberg all scored in the first period as the defending state Class 2A champion Eagles built a 3-0 lead. 

Jimmy Clark scored less than two minutes into the second period to pull Edina (6-1-1) within 3-1. But Andor and Eric Choi each scored in the second to put the Eagles ahead 5-1.

Sam Schowalter was outstanding in goal for Eden Prairie, turning aside 36 shots.

Hermantown 3, Mahtomedi 0

STILLWATER - Junior defenseman Ty Hanson scored twice as No. 1 Hermantown beat No. 2 Mahtomedi 3-0 at the St. Croix Valley Recreation Center in a showdown between Class 1A's top two ranked teams.

Hanson gave the Hawks (6-0-0) a 1-0 lead with a goal in the second period before adding a short-handed goal into an empty net with 29 seconds left. Kade Kohanski also scored for Hermantown.

Mahtomedi (4-3-0) got 39 saves from Ben Dardis.

Red Wing 3, Winona 2 (OT)

WINONA - Red Wing's Nick Wooden scored 53 seconds into overtime as the Wingers (3-3-0) rallied for a 3-2 win over Winona (1-6-0) at the Bud King Ice Arena as Winhawks coach Fran McDevitt was honored for his two decades-plus tenure leading the program.

Trailing 2-0, Red Wing's Casey Larson scored on the power play with 8:26 left. Tristen Peterson then scored with 18 seconds left to send the game into overtime.

McDevitt was honored for having coached 500 games in the program. He hit the 500 mark in the team's final game last season. He's in his 21st season coaching the Winhawks.

"It was amazing to see so many players—I don’t know what the number was, who have graduated—come back," said McDevitt, who was unaware he was going to be honored before the game and received an engraved driver as part of the ceremony. "I guess they think I need help with my golf game."

Andover 2, Wayzata 2 (OT)

PLYMOUTH - In a matchup of Class 2A powers, No. 6-2A Andover (5-1-1) and No. 5-2A Wayzata (3-3-1) skated to a 2-2 tie at the Plymouth Ice Center.

Andover opened a 2-0 lead in the first after two goals by Cayden Casey. His first came 45 seconds into the contest.

Wayzata then tied the game in the second period on a goal by Rhys Wallin and a power-play tally by Luke Miller.

Wayzata outshot Andover 37-27.

Lakeville South 4, Eastview 1

APPLE VALLEY - No. 3-2A Lakeville South stayed unbeaten with a 4-1 win over giant-killer Eastview (5-2-0) at the Apple Valley Sports Arena.

Eastview, which already had recorded upset victories over No. 17-2A St. Thomas Academy and No. 9-2A Prior Lake, took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Tanner Krogberg in the first.

Ashton Dahms and Ben Portner gave the Cougars (6-0-0) a 2-1 lead after two periods before Aidan Willis scored a shorthanded and a power-play goal in the third to carry Lakeville South to the win.

Tanner Ludtke and Mason Johnson were each credited with two assists for the Cougars.

Minnetonka 4, Moorhead 1

MOORHEAD - No. 14-2A Minnetonka (6-2-0) scored three unanswered goals in the first period and added another in the third to take a four-goal lead en route to its 4-1 triumph over No. 12-2A Moorhead (4-5-0) at the Moorhead Sports Center.

Gavin Garry had a goal and an assist in the first period as the Skippers built their big lead. Reagan Shepherd scored early in the third to put Minnetonka ahead 4-0.

Joe Kortan's power-play goal with 5:24 remaining ended Minnetonka goaltender Beau Motzko's shutout bid. He finished with 23 saves.

Minnetonka has now won four-straight games, including the last two over top 20-ranked teams. The Skippers beat No. 13-2A Chaska 3-2 on Thursday.

Alexandria 4, East Grand Forks 1

DATELINE - Josiah Gronholz's hat trick led No. 19-1A Alexandria (3-3-0) to a 4-1 win over No. 5-1-1A East Grand Forks (4-4-0) at the East Grand Forks Civic Arena.

Gronholz gave the Cardinals a 1-0 lead by scoring 2:28 into the contest. He then made it 2-0 with a goal with 1:22 left in the first.

Jaksen Panzer's short-handed goal brought the Green Wave within one, 2-1, early in the second period. However, Alexandria's Jack Lamski's power-play goal with 4:34 left gave the Cardinals a 3-1 lead. Gronholz's empty-net goal rounded out the scoring.

Alexandria's Teagan Pfeffer made 32 saves.

St. Michael-Albertville 6, Blaine 1

ALBERTVILLE - J.P. Johnson scored twice and Austin Dietrich made 38 saves as St. Michael-Albertville (5-1-0) cruised past No. 19-2A Blaine (3-2-2) 6-1 at St. Michael-Albertville Arena.

The Knights led 2-0 after the first and went up 3-0 early in the second on a Tyler Jordan goal. Johnson scored both his goals in the third period.

Chisago Lakes 6, Mound Westonka 5

LINDSTROM - Cameron Stangl's power-play goal with 32 seconds left in the second period proved to be the winner as No. 13-1A Chisago Lakes (6-1-1) held on to beat Mound Westonka (4-4-0) 6-5 at the Chisago Lakes Ice Arena.

Mound Westonka trailed 6-3 entering the third, when Max Krebsbach scored twice to complete his hat trick and pull the White Hawks to within 6-5.
