Hockey Night: Andover uses big third period to cruise past Maple Grove

Dec. 16: Cretin-Derham Hall outlasts Benilde-St. Margaret's; Detroit Lakes topples Northern Lakes; Warroad too much for EGF

Andover 5, Maple Grove 3

MAPLE GROVE - No. 6-2A Andover scored three-straight goals to open the third period as it defeated No. 4-2A Maple Grove 5-3 on Thursday night at the Maple Grove Community Center.

Cooper Conway opened the third-period scoring with a goal 1:53 into the period to give the Huskies (5-1-0) a 2-1 lead. Cayden Casey and Jacob Pierseon scored back-to-back goals in less than a minute for a 4-1 lead.

Jack Kernan scored on the power play for Maple Grove (5-2-1) before Hudson Zinda's second goal of the night gave the Huskies a 5-2 lead.

Maple Grove's Finn Brink then scored his second to make it 5-3 late in the third.

Cretin-Derham Hall 5, Benilde-St. Margaret's 3

ST. PAUL - No. 2-2A Cretin Derham Hall (5-1-0) avenged its loss to No. 7-2A Benilde-St. Margaret's (2-4-0) in a 2021 Section 6AA semifinal with a 5-3 win at Highland Ice Arena.

The Raiders, who are in a different section than Benilde-St. Margaret's season, had five players score goals.

After Benilde-St. Margaret's Brady Yakesh got the scoring started 6:10 into the game, Joey Sylvester tied it at 1-1 21 seconds later.

Gave Rasmussen gave the Raiders a 2-1 lead with 8:59 left. Devin Cardenas scored CDH's third-straight goal of the period before Benilde-St. Margaret's Mason Stenger brought the Red Knights within one, 3-2, with 1:50 left.

A power-play goal by Michael Risteau tied the game for Benilde-St. Margaret's but Jake Sondreal regained the lead for the Raiders with 3:52 left in the second.

Jake Fisher provided an insurance goal at 4:16 into the third.

Detroit Lakes 4, Northern Lakes 1

BREEZY POINT - No. 12-1A Detroit Lakes (4-3-0) used two first-period goals to pull away for a 4-1 win over No. 11-1A Northern Lakes (2-2-0) at the Breezy Point Hockey Arena.

Beau Boehne gave Detroit Lakes a 1-0 lead with a goal 11 minutes into the contest. Cole Deraney then make it 2-0.

Ben Hines then tipped in a Jacob Thomas wrist shot from the point to give Detroit Lakes a 3-0 lead after 3:30 In the second.

Northern Lakes then got on the scoreboard with 10 minutes to play in the second but Detroit Lakes added another goal for the win.

Warroad 6, East Grand Forks 3

EAST GRAND FORKS - Warroad's Daimon Gardner scored two goals and added two assists as the No. 3-1A Warriors (6-0-0) defeated No. 5-1A East Grand Forks (4-3-0) 6-3 at the East Grand Forks Civic Center.

Gardner's second goal gave Warroad a 3-2 lead before Ryan Lund's tally with 2:09 left in the second period pushed the lead to 4-2.

After East Grand Forks scored on a power play to open the third period, Carlson Pilgrim scored with Gardner credited with an assist to push the Warriors' lead back to two, 5-3.

The teams have played for the Section 8A title each of the last three seasons.

Edina 5, Grand Rapids 1

EDINA - Edina's Matt VanderVort scored three goals in the second period as No. 1-2A Edina (5-0-0) defeated No. 11-2A Grand Rapids (5-2-0) 5-1 in a first-round game in the Edina Holiday Classic at Braemar Arena.

Jimmy Clark's shorthanded goal gave Edina a 2-1 lead with 5:56 remaining in the first. The Hornets led 2-1 after one.

VanderVort's goals came during an eight-minute stretch in the second period.

Eden Prairie 3, Elk River/Zimmerman 2 (OT)

EDINA - Wyatt Smith scored in overtime to give No. 16-2A Eden Prairie (3-2-0) a 3-2 win over by No. 20-2A Elk River/Zimmerman (5-2-0) in the first-round game in the Edina Holiday Classic at Braemar Arena.

Smith's goal came 2:40 into the extra period and after Elk River/Zimmerman had a chance to win on the previous possession.

Blaise Schutt gave the Elks a 1-0 lead before Eden Prairie, the defending state Class 2A champion, got goals by Ryan Andor and Teddy Townsend for a 2-1 lead after two periods.

Elk River/Zimmerman's Andrew Foss tied the score with 6:28 left, setting the stage for overtime.

Luverne 6, Worthington 3

LUVERNE - Patrick Kroski and Owen Sudenga each scored two goals as No. 20-1A Luverne (5-0-0) built a 5-0 lead over Worthington (3-2-0) and recorded a 6-3 win over the Trojans at the Blue Mound Ice Arena.

Kroski, who also had two assists, netted his two goals in the first while Sudenga's came in the second. Kroski, a sophomore, has 23 points this season, tied for second most in the state.

Worthington, which has one of its best teams in the program's history, scored three times in the third period but came up short in the comeback attempt.

Mounds View 7, Irondale 0

VADNAIS HEIGHTS - Grant Dean's hat trick and two assists led the way as Mounds View (3-3-1) blanked Irondale (0-4-0) 7-0 at the TCO Sports Garden.

Dean scored a goal in each period for the Mustangs. Wyatt Witham had a four-point night (1g, 3a) and Johnny Conlin added three points (1g, 2a) as Mound View broke out to a 3-0 lead and never looked back.

Aidan Petrich made 18 saves for the shutout.
