MAPLEWOOD - Senior forward Jack Senden scored a goal and added an assist and senior goaltender Nick Erickson made 40 saves as No. 8-2A Hill-Murray beat No. 5-2A Wayzata 2-1 on Wednesday night at Aldrich Arena.
Senden scored in the first and Marcus Kaufman added a second-period goal as the Pioneers (4-2-0) took a 2-0 lead. Wayzata (3-3-0) defenseman Cashen Naeve answered with a shot that went in off a Hill-Murray defenseman's skate to make it 2-1 with 3:54 left in the second.
Hill-Murray killed a 5-on-3 Wayzata power-play late in the third period as it secured the victory.
The teams were set to meet in the state Class 2A quarterfinals last spring, a matchup that was aborted after Hill-Murray was forced to drop out of the tourney because of COVID-19 protocols. Wayzata received a bye into the semifinals, where the Trojans lost 5-3 to Lakeville South.
