Hockey Night: Begley's late goal boosts Hill-Murray past Mahtomedi

Dec. 9: Chanhassen outlasts Delano, East Grand Forks top North Dakota's No. 2 team, Eden Prairie routs Blake

Hill-Murray 3, Mahtomedi 2

MAPLEWOOD - Alex Begley's goal with 3:39 remaining lifted No. 6-2A Hill-Murray (2-2-0) to a 3-2 win over No. 2-1A Mahtomedi (3-2-0) at Aldrich Arena.

Begley, a senior defenseman, rushed toward the net off a face off in the Mahtomedi zone, swatted the puck out of the air with his glove as he reached the crease then shoveled the puck past standout Zephyrs goaltender Ben Dardis.

Dardis, a senior who led the state in save percentage entering the game, finished with whopping 55 saves. Nick Erickson, another of the state's top senior goaltenders, made 20 saves for the Pioneers.

Mahtomedi's Brent Gulenchyn opened the scoring 1:10 into the second period, and the The Pioneers got on the board when Ben Miller scored just more than a minute later. Hill-Murray's Brady Ingebritson made it 2-1 late in the second on an assist by Begley.

Corey Bohmert tied the game with a goal with 6:29 remaining, setting the stage for Begley's game-winner.

Chanhassen 4, Delano 2

VICTORIA - Chanhassen scored the game's final three goals to hand No. 4-1A Delano (3-1-0) a 4-2 loss at the Victoria Recreation Center.

The teams traded goals in the first period as Anders Peterson and Bruce Halonen scored for the Tigers and Caden Lee and Gavin Uhlenkamp scored for Chanhassen. Uhlenkamp's goal with 6:56 left in the first started the Storm's three-goal streak.

Evan Miller scored a power-play goal in the second period and Owen Buesgens recorded an empty-net goal with 66 seconds left.

The Storm improved to 2-2-0.

East Grand Forks 3, Grand Forks Central (N.D.) 2

GRAND FORKS, N.D. - It took two third-period goals for No. 5-1A East Grand Forks (4-2-0) to record a 3-2 win over a Grand Forks Central, N.D. (2-3-0), the No. 2-ranked team in North Dakota, at the East Grand Forks Civic Arena.

East Grand Forks' Jaksen Panzer and Grand Forks Central's Wyatt Wockenfuss each scored power-play goals in the first period before Grand Forks Central took a 2-1 lead in the second when Dominic Gerszewski scored.

The Green Wave tied the contest when Grady Magner scored 2:09 into the third. Justin Overgaard netted the game-winner on the power play with 3:33 remaining.

Panzer finished the night with a goal and two assists. His 11 goals rank second in the state.

Eden Prairie 10, Blake 3

EDEN PRAIRIE - No. 15 Eden Prairie (1-2-0), the defending state Class 2A champion, erupted for 10 goals as the Eagles downed Blake (1-3-0) 10-3 at the Eden Prairie Community Center.

Blake scored the game's first goal before the Eagles rebounded with four-straight to close the first 17 minutes. The teams traded goals in the second before Eden Prairie scored three unanswered goals for an 8-2 lead.

Rogers 4, Blaine 4 (OT)

BLAINE - Rogers scored four of the game's last five goals as the No. 17-2A Royals (2-1-1) and No. 20-2A Blaine (1-1-2) skated to a 4-4 overtime tie at Fogerty Arena.

Chase Cheslock scored his second goal with 9:10 left in the third tie the score at 4-4.

Blaine took a 3-0 lead on first-period goals by Connor Dickman and Nick Mikan and a second-period power-play tally by Bryce Laager. Rogers got back-to-back goals by Ty Frederickson and Cheslock, but Laager gave the Bengals a 4-2 lead with 4:30 left in the second.

Trent Peluf's power-play goal 95 seconds into the third period brought the Royals within one, setting the stage for Cheslock's second goal.

Monticello 2, Orono 1

LONG LAKE - No. 15-1A Monticello (1-3-0) snapped its three-game losing streak with a 2-1 win over No. 10-1A Orono (2-3-1) at the Orono Ice Arena.

The Moose got two early first-period goals and hung on for the win. Tyler Bitz and Brayden Dunn were credited with the goals.

Connor Lang scored a power-play goal for the Spartans.

Duluth Denfeld 6, Cloquet/Esko/Carlton 2

DULUTH - No. 8-1A Duluth Denfeld (4-2-0) scored three goals in 5:59 as the Hunters recorded a 6-2 win over Cloquet/Esko/Carlton (2-3-0) at the Essentia Duluth Heritage Center.

Connor McClure's short-handed goal with 2:01 left in the second gave the Hunters a 3-2 lead. McClure then recorded a power-play goal 59 seconds in the third period.

Whittaker Heart, who also scored two goals, netted one 2:59 into the third for a 5-2 Denfeld lead.

Simon Davidson and Dominic Brennan each were credited with three assists for the Hunters.
