Recap from the lone game on Wednesday night, a thriller between Benilde-St. Margaret's and Wayzata, both of which are ranked in the state's top seven in Class 2A.
PLYMOUTH - Wayzata sophomore Luke Miller scored 2:07 into overtime to lift the Trojans to a 1-0 victory over Benilde-St. Margaret's on Wednesday night at the Plymouth Ice Center, putting an emphatic end to a goaltending duel between the Section 6AA rivals.
Miller pulled the puck out of a scrum off a face-off and fired wide left of the goal, but the puck took a lively bounce off the end boards and skidded back in front of the right goalpost. Miller was left all alone to cooly backhand the puck past Red Knight's sophomore goaltender Mason McElroy.
McElroy, star of Wayzata's Bantam AA team that won the state championship last season, made 20 saves. Will Ingemann, a junior who was brilliant in helping the Trojans reach the state Class 2A tournament last season, also had 20 saves.
The goal was Miller's fourth of the season, and the game was a rematch of last season's Section 6AA championship, which Wayzata won 3-2.
Benilde-St. Margaret's (2-2-0) is No. 4 in Class 2A in the latest Legacy Hockey Power Rankings while Wayzata (3-1-0) is No. 7.
Benilde-St. Margaret's had two power plays in the final 6:48 and went 0-for-3 with the man advantage. Wayzata was 0-for-2 on its power play chances, including one midway through the third.
Wayzata had a 21-20 advantage in shots on goal.
