MOORHEAD - Senior forward Max Strand completed his hat trick by scoring 4:18 into overtime to lift Roseau to a wild 7-6 victory over Moorhead on Tuesday at the Moorhead Sports Center in a matchup of longtime Section 8AA rivals.
Roseau's Kellen Murphy finished a goal and five assists. Three of his assists came on consecutive second-period goals as the No. 12-2A Rams (4-1-0) rallied from a 4-2 deficit to take a 5-3 lead.
Carson Triggs scored with 3:40 remaining for No. 9-2A Moorhead (2-3-0) to tie the score at 6-6 and force the extra session.
The teams have dominated Section 8AA, playing for the title 10 times since 2005, including six-straight meetings from 2005 to 2010. Only four times since 1990 has a team other than Roseau or Moorhead represented the section at the state tournament.
LITTLE FALLS - Collin Kray's shorthanded goal 4:25 into overtime boosted Little Falls past Alexandria 7-6 at Exchange Arena, keeping the No. 6-1A Flyers undefeated through six games.
No. 16-1A Alexandria (1-2-0) led 6-3 entering the third and appeared poised for the upset. But Little Falls got a goal from Matt Filippi and two from George Moore to force the extra session. Moore's second goal came with 55 seconds left in regulation.
Little Falls' Carter Oothoudt and Matthew Cooper each took penalties in the overtime session, and Cooper was still in the box when Kray scored the decisive goal.
NEW HOPE - Wes Berg scored with 13.5 seconds left as No. 13-2A Gentry Academy (2-0-0) averted a major upset by beating Robbinsdale Armstrong/Cooper 2-1 at New Hope Ice Arena.
Cole Majkozak scored for Armstrong/Cooper (2-3-0) with 2:32 to force the 1-1 tie. Reese Shaw opened the scoring for Gentry Academy, which won the state Class 1A title last season with an undefeated record and opened this season with a 9-2 rout of highly regarded Duluth Denfeld.
Gentry Academy outshot Armstrong/Cooper 41-14 as Wings goaltender Reid Lucas turned in a spectacular performance.
LONG LAKE - Orono's Ben Setnicker scored 2:58 into the third period as the No. 10-1A Spartans (2-2-1) forged a 3-3 tie with No. 19-1A New Prague (1-2-0).
Brooks Fegers and Bradley Walker scored first-period goals for Orono, and New Prague rallied in the second with goals by Braeden Woitas and Layton Kuehner.
Woitas scored again less than 2 minutes into the third to put New Prague ahead 3-2.
VICTORIA - Senior defenseman Wyatt Schmitz scored with 2:01 left in overtime to lift Holy Angels to the upset victory over Holy Family at the Victoria Recreation Center.
Noah Hermanson opened the scoring for Holy Family late in the first period and Holy Family's Parter Osborne answered with a third-period goal.
DULUTH - Matt Linder's hat trick propelled Forest Lake to a 5-3 triumph over Duluth East on Tuesday in a matchup of Sectoin 7AA rivals at the Heritage Sports Center.
Forest Lake evened its record at 1-1-1 while Duluth East dropped to 0-6-0.
