Hockey Night: Zam Plante leads Hermantown to dramatic win over BSM

Hermanton 6, Benilde-St. Margaret's 5

ST. LOUIS PARK - Hermantown junior forward Zam Plante, the state's top returning scorer, opened the season in dramatic fashion on Friday night, scoring on a backhander with 1:06 remaining to lift the Hawks to a 6-5 triumph over Benilde-St. Margaret's in the opening round of the Champions Cup.

Plante, who scored 61 points in 20 games last season, completed his hat trick with the dramatic goal, fueling the No. 1-1A Hawks (1-0-0) past the No. 5-2A Red Knights (2-1-1).

Hill-Murray 4, Eden Prairie 1

ST. LOUIS PARK - Junior forward Brady Ingebritson scored two power play goals in the second period to boost Hill-Murray past Eden Prairie 4-1 in the opening round of the Champions Cup at the St. Louis Park Rec Center.

Leo Grub and Anthony Madigan scored third-period goals for the Pioneers (2-1-1), who beat Eden Prairie 4-1 in the 2020 state Class 2A title game.

Sophomore Teddy Townsend scored the only goal of the first period for the defending Class 2A state champion Eagles, who were making their season debut.

Mahtomedi 5, East Grand Forks 0

STILLWATER - Senior goaltender Ben Dardis made 40 saves to record his second shutout of the season and 18th of his career to lead No. 4-1A Mahtomedi past No. 3-1A East Grand Forks 5-0 at the St. Croix Valley Recreation Center.

Junior forward David Wolsfeld scored twice for Mahtomedi (3-1-0), improving his team-leading season totals to five goals and five assists. 

East Grand Forks dropped to 1-2-0 with the loss.

Moorhead 6, Andover 1

MOORHEAD - Harper Bentz scored two power play goals and Moorhead went 3-for-4 with the man advantage as the No. 8-2A Spuds cruised past No. 3-2A Andover 6-1 at the Moorhead Sports Center.

Cayden Casey scored the lone Andover goal in the first period to pull the Huskies (2-1-0) to within 2-1.

Moorhead (1-2-0), which finished with four unanswered goals, got 30 saves from sophomore Kai Weigel.

Lake of the Woods 4, International Falls 3

INTERNATIONAL FALLS - Lake of the Woods rallied from a two-goal deficit entering the third period to beat International Falls 4-3 at Bronco Arena in the opening round of the Border Battle.

Jack Wood, Charlie Eck and Jordan Kvernen scored the third-period goals for the Bears, who were making their season debut.

Ben Glowack had a goal and an assist for International Falls (0-2-0).

Red Lake Falls 11, Crookston 1

CROOSTON - Brock Seeger and Ty Kennett each scored five points and Red Lake Falls erupted for eight second-period goals in its 11-1 triumph over Crookston at the Crookston Sports Center.

Kennett, a senior, leads the state with 18 points in four games.

Gentry Academy 9, Duluth Denfeld 2

VADNAIS HEIGHTS - Gentry Academy, last seasons's state Class 1A champion that has opted up to play in Class 2A for the playoffs, opened the season in impressive fashion, steamrolling No. 5-1A Duluth Denfeld 9-2 at the TCO Sports Garden.

Reese Shaw and Max VonKlingggraeff each scored twice for the Stars. Shaw, a senior, finished with a game-best four points.

Proctor 4, Pine City 3 OT

PINE CITY - Kennan Reyelts scored in overtime to lift Proctor to a 4-3 triumph over Pine City at the Pine City Civic Center.

Reyelts, a senior forward, also scored in the second period as Proctor (3-1-0) took a 2-1 lead. 

Pine City (1-2-0) got a goal from Jimmy Lindblom with 7 minutes remaining to force the extra session.
