BLOOMINGTON - Zach Howard scored two third-period goals in 59 seconds to lead Class 2A No. 13 St. Thomas Academy to a 4-3 win over Class 2A No. 1 Cretin-Derham Hall Saturday in The Opener at the Bloomington Ice Garden.
Howard's first goal came at 6:26 and tied the game at three. At 7:25, Howard again lit the lamp to give STA its second lead of the game.
The Cadets held a 1-0 lead after the first period when John Johannson scored at 9:21.
The second period belonged to Cretin-Derham Hall. Zach Sondreal tied the game at 3:43 and then Attila Lippai gave the Raiders a 2-1 lead at 4:09. The Cadets tied the game with a Tommy Cronin goal at 5:26 but the Raiders took a 3-2 with 61 seconds left in the period when Jake Sondreal scored.
MINNETONKA - Hudson Zinda's power-play goal 3:46 into the third periold lifted Class 2A No. 3 Andover to a 4-3 win over No. 11 Roseau in second-round action of the Tonka Thanksgiving Preview at the Pagel Activity Center.
Roseau had a 3-2 lead after two periods as St. Cloud State commit Thor Byfuglien, a senior defenseman, scored at 5:30 in the second period. He also scored the Rams' first goal of the contest.
Andover tied the game 94 seconds into the third period with a goal by Davis Gohman. Zinda and Crosby Perry were credited with assists.
WARROAD - Daimon Gardner, a former youth hockey star in Warroad who returned to town for his senior season, scored two goals and added two assists as Class 1A No. 2 Warroad recorded a 4-3 win over Mounds View at The Gardens Arena.
Gardner's first goal gave the Warriors a 3-1 lead 3:54 into the second period. The senior forward's second goal, a short-handed marker, came 24 seconds into the third period and gave Warroad a 4-2 lead.
Jayson Shaugabay also scored a goal and added an assist.
INVER GROVE HEIGHTS - Park of Cottage Grove scored five-straight goals, three via the power play, as the Wolfpack recorded a 5-3 win over Simley to win the Simley Turkey Trot at the Veterans Memorial Community Center.
Park held off a late rally by Simley, which got two goals and an assist from Jayar Luedke in the third period.
MARSHALL - Winona Cotter's return to the ice was an unsuccessful one as the Ramblers fell 9-1 to Waconia in the Marshall Thanksgiving Classic at Red Baron Arena.
The Ramblers, who competed in the MSHSL playoffs breifly in the mid- to late-1970s, had their first two games postponed this due to quarantine requirements.
Cotter played a junior varsity schedule last season and had been part of co-operative program with Winona for several seasons before that.
