The third time attempting a shot on goal in overtime was the charm for Eden Prairie junior forward Jackson Blake.
After seeing one shot go wide and another stopped in the first overtime session, Blake buried a rebound 2:06 into the second overtime to give the Eagles a 2-1 win over Lakeville South Saturday night at the Xcel Energy Center.
The state championship was the third overall for Eden Prairie, 21-1-2. Lakeville South, which was making its first-ever state championship game appearance, ends at 20-1-2.
Eden Prairie’s Carter Batchelder, who scored the Eagles’ game-winning overtime goal in the semifinal, got a pass to Drew Holt whose shot was stopped by Lakeville South’s Cody Ticen but the rebound went to Blake, who was in the slot, and beat Ticen between the legs as he was moving across the goal.
That trio got the Eagles on the board in the first period when Batchelder’s shot beat Ticen high on the glove side in the first period after Blake passed the puck behind him.
Lakeville South’s Cam Boche tapped in Tanner Ludtke’s pass to tie the game, 1-1, with 3:56 left in the second period.
Both teams had chances to win the game in the final minutes of regulation and in the first overtime.
Overtime is the time for the Eagles for the second-straight night.
