Eight players score in Gentry Academy's 8-1 triumph

High-scoring Gentry Academy entered Saturday’s Class A State Tournament championship game averaging more than eight goals a game and that effort continued as eight players scored to give the No. 2 seed Stars an 8-1 win over Dodge County at the Xcel Energy Center.

Gentry Academy, 19-0, became the first Class 1A team since Benilde-St. Margaret’s in 1999 to win a state title in its first appearance. The Stars also became the first undefeated Class 1A state champion since Hermantown in 2007 and the class's first undefeated and untied team since Red Wing went 28-0 in 1997.

Dodge County, which was making its first-ever state championship appearance, ended its season 19-4-1.

After scoring one goal on 23 shots in the first period, a three-goal scoring outburst ensured the Stars would win the state championship,

The first-period goals came on the power play when Damon Furuseth took a csross-ice pass, skated toward the slot and fired his left-handed shot, beating the goaltender on the glove side for the 1-0 lead.

The second period scoring started on a deflection by Wes Bergl as he redirected a shot from the right point by Isaiah Norlin. Barrett Hall’s rebound power-play tally then gave Gentry a 3-0 lead before Bailey McGraw tapped in a feed from Reese Shaw for a 4-0 lead. Gentry outshot Dodge County 12-1 in the second period.

It took waiting until the third period before Dodge County’s Brody Lamb got on the scoreboard. The junior scored his 10th goal of the state tournament when his wrist shot from the high slot beat the goaltender on the glove side. The goal was Lamb’s 52nd of the season.

After Dodge County started on the power play, a Wildcat penalty set up 4-on-4 hockey. Norlin skated around the net and scored on a wraparound for a 5-1 lead. Furuseth was credited with his third assist on the play.

The Stars netted their third power-play goal when Brevan Grigus scored on a shot that beat the goaltender high on the glove side. Nick Sajevic flicked in a backhand for a 7-1 lead. He broke into the zone after receiving a pass from Grips at the red line and drove toward the net.

Shaw closed the scoring when he took a pass from Hall at the goalmouth and tapped it in the net with 3:51 remaining. Gentry Academy outshot Dodge County, 54-9.

Furuseth led the Stars with four points while Shaw added two assists to go with this goal. Grigus, Hall, McGraw, Norlin and Sajevic each added two points.
