Barbour's two goals lift Crimson

Two power-play goals, one late in the first period and another early in the second, lifted No. 4 seed Maple Grove to a 5-2 win over No. 5 seed Andover in Wednesday night’s Class 2A quarterfinal game at the Xcel Energy Center.

Ian Barbour scored the first of his two goals with a power-play goal with just 13 seconds left on the first period clock to give Maple Grove a 2-1 lead. Henry Nelson opened the second period with the Crimson’s second power-play goal.

Barbour recorded the only third-period goal with 3:30 remaining as Maple Grove improved to 21-1. Andover is now 18-3-1, all of the losses to Maple Grove.

Nelson added an assist to his power-play goal while Josh Giuliani was credited with two assists.

Weston Knox assisted on both Andover goals.

Jack Wieneke stopped 21 of 23 shots to record his 19th win of the season.

Three Stars

  1. Barbour. The senior forward now has scored two goals three times this season.
  2. Kyle Kukkonen. The Crimons’ leading scorer got one goal but was an offensive threat.
  3. Gavyn Thoreson. Scored one goal for Andover and nearly had a short-handed tally, too.
