It would be inaccurate, and cliche, to say these two teams are trending in the right direction. No, Moorhead and Rogers are traveling at supersonic speeds — headed squarely at what is likely a least a modicum of playoff success and potentially much, much more.
First, though, they meet Saturday in a highly intriguing showdown of former Section 8AA foes (Rogers was moved into Section 5AA over the summer).
No. 6-2A Moorhead (15-5-1) is unbeaten in its last 12 games, although the Spuds’ last three outings (a 5-4 win over Grand Rapids, 3-2 win over Duluth East and 4-4 tie with Warroad) have all ended in overtime.
Moorhead senior forward Gavin Lindberg is making a late push for a Mr. Hockey nomination, as he’s scored 28 points in his last eight games and has 46 for the season. Junior Harper Bentz leads the Spuds with 26 goals.
No. 13-2A Rogers (14-6-1) is also brimming with momentum, as the Royals are coming off one of the biggest wins in program history Saturday after outlasting No. 1-2A Andover 2-1 in overtime.
Six-foot-four junior defenseman Chase Cheslock scored the winning goal and junior goaltender Cade Chapman made 40 saves in the triumph over the Huskies.
