BLAKE vs. Providence Academy

7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 13
Plymouth Ice Center, Plymouth

Strange as it might sound, a blowout loss to Minneapolis on Dec. 7 seems to have turned Providence Academy’s season on its ear — in a good way.

The Lions were dumped 8-2 on Dec. 7 and fell to 2-2-0 — a decidedly mediocre start to the season. Since then, however, No. 8-1A Providence Academy has won 10 straight.

Keeping one of the state’s longest win streaks alive on Thursday won’t be easy, as Blake represents a significant step up in competition. The Bears (6-6-0) are battle tested having faced several of the state’s top Class 2A teams.

Sophomore Louie Wehmann is having a standout season for Providence Academy, as he’s racked up 15 goals and 17 assists to lead the team with 32 points. Junior Andrew Owen (25 points) and sophomore Sammy Lewis (21 points) are two more of the team’s top scorers.  Sophomore goaltender Evan Villagomez is undefeated in six starts.

Blake junior Carter Krenke is in the midst of a breakout season, as he leads the Bears with nine goals among his 17 points. Senior William Matzke, a standout in the Upper Midwest High School Elite League this fall, has eight goals.

The Bears are coming off a northern road trip over the weekend in which they beat Bemidji 6-1 and lost to Roseau by the same score.
