Roseau vs. Moorhead

6 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 26
Moorhead Sports Center, Moorhead

Welcome to Roseau’s “other” rivalry game. The one big strike against Roseau’s long-running conflict with Warroad is that the teams no longer meet in the playoffs. Moorhead, meanwhile, has been a perennial roadblock for the Rams in Section 8AA. The Spuds have defeated Roseau in the section final in three of the last six seasons.

Parker Gast scored twice and Kai Weigel stopped 20 of 21 shots as Moorhead beat Roseau 5-1 on Dec. 6 in the teams’ first regular-season meeting. Few teams rely as heavily on a single go-to scorer than the Spuds. Senior forward Aaron Reierson leads No. 19-2A Moorhead (9-8-0) with 18 goals — no other Spuds player has more than three.

Roseau (10-6-1), which has lost just twice in its last 10 outings, received a rocket-boost of confidence on Saturday with a 2-2 tie against Wayzata, which was ranked No. 1 in Class 2A at the time. Junior goaltender Atreyu Jones stopped 39 shots and scoring whiz Noah Urness had a goal and an assist against the Trojans. Urness, a junior forward, leads the Rams with 26 goals. HIs 53 points are the sixth most in the state. Jones has a 4-1-1 record and 1.99 goals-against average.
