Chaska vs. Chanhassen

7 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 21
Victoria Recreation Center, Victoria

Longevity is the only key ingredient this west metro rivalry is missing, as the two teams — which combined for one season at the high school level before Chanhassen became a stand-alone program— only dates to the 2010-11 season.

Chanhassen had the advantage over Chaska in the early years, but the Hawks had been the dominant squad in recent history, having won 13 straight meetings against the Storm entering the season. No. 4-2A Chanhassen (14-1-0) broke that hex in convincing fashion on Dec. 6, beating Chaska 4-0 in Chaska behind junior forward Tyler Smith’s two goals and junior goaltender Kam Hendrickson’s 13 saves. Hendrickson’s 0.99 save percentage is the best in the state.

Losses to graduation and early departures left Chaska (4-11-1) with a mostly young, untested roster. Despite their inexperience, the Hawks have had some signature moments this season, inlcuding a 5-4 victory over Eden Prairie on Dec. 29. Senior forward Ty Broten is the Hawks’ top goal scorer with seven.
