Hill-Murray vs. Benilde-St. Margaret's

7:15 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 22
St. Louis Park Rec Center, St. Louis Park

Hill-Murray coach Bill Lechner and his Benilde-St. Margaret’s counterpart, Ken Pauly, entered the season with a combined 1,063 victories and five state championships. They met most famously in the 2012 state Class 2A title game, when Grant Besse scored all five Benilde-St. Margaret’ goals — three of them shorthanded — in a 5-1 Red Knights’ victory.

Thursday’s meeting doesn't promise that level of drama but will offer at least a small measure of where these teams stand — and where they might be headed.

No. 9-2A Hill-Murray (3-2-0) lost almost its entire defensive corps from last season and leans heavily on the mostly brilliant work of senior Jack Erickson (1.94 goals-against average).

Junior forwards Drew Stewart and Michael Risteau each have three goals to lead the Red Knights, who erupted for seven goals in their last outing, a 7-2 victory over previously unbeaten Holy Angels on Saturday.
